I agree, I don't mind drama, but I preferred a bit more discovery and action, not really like episodic bad guy or bad situation of the day. I much more prefer longer arcs and such...

I never watched the original Stargate. Drama is my #1 genre followed by Sci-fi. Can't say what caused the show to be cancelled, I'm not an expert.
Watching Atlantis now on Hulu. Then will get to SG-1 later on.
Personally I'd rather own disks when buying because no streaming needed and the sound quality a ton better, plus usually extra features, like the Star Trek Original Series has, amazing special features! Highly recommend that buy the way.

Why? Because I think the percentage of high-quality episodes across those 40 episodes is very high and that might make it the strongest in the franchise.
Out of the other 314 episodes (SG-1/Atlantis) are there equal or better episodes? Out of 300 episodes, I'd sure hope so, but you've got to sit through a lot of snoozers!
They're very different types of series, so maybe it's not a comparison as personal preference. SG-1 storylines are a lot more like Atlantis, than either is like Universe. That's not to say there aren't parallels, as Universe does have some similarities to Atlantis (on an unfamiliar vessel, stuck far away and even more cut off, and basically can only dial locally, even though "locally" changes on Universe) the storylines tend to be a bit differently written (even when plot elements are borrowed).
That said, I've thought it would be a hard watch if you've never seen the original two series and might not have the significance that it does if you don't know the nuance of the originals (I have seen them) and enjoy the guest stars and other references.
But others have posted that their non-Stargate friends tended to like SG:U better than their Stargate friends, so maybe that isn't relevant.
TBC, I define high-quality episodes as those that I really like
I always felt that was the ending they decided on (knowing it was ending). I didn't take it as a cliffhanger that needed to be solved at the start of another season. It did give them a launching spot if a 3rd season got picked up or someone else licensed the show.
