Reminder/FYI if you're like me and interested in upgrading an older Garmin but getting lost amid the many options. I'm not interested in the cost of the new Fenix 8 and I currently have 6 Sapphire. So I'm looking at things like 7-series, Epix, 965/265. I'm hoping we will see some of these drop to $300ish within the next month or two. IMO, $500 or even $450 for models that are now up to 2.5 years old is just too pricey for me. You do you.
Summary:
7-series is MIPS (Epix Gen 2 is AMOLED)
7x has flashlight (no flashlight on other 7's nor on Epix Gen 2 nor on 965/265). Reviews seem to indicate the flashlight is a great feature and not gimmicky. Although I suppose that's limited to people who wear their Garmin around-the-clock opposed to just for their workouts. Update- also there is a "strobe light" feature for models with flashlights that matches your cadence when running. So if you're an early AM or late-night runner, you get a little more safety.
7-series and Epix Gen 2 all have touchscreen and were all released around January 2022.
Then there's 965/265, which are AMOLED and touchscreen, no flashlight, but 965/265 have some capabilities not found on the 7-series and Epix Gen 2 (the big standout to me is running dynamics available in 965 without need for an external "pod" or sensor). I've always thought running dynamics would be cool, but DCR's review of 965 made it sound like , at that time, it was still a little gimmicky and not super useful. Update: running dynamics may be available on other models without a pod, per a commenter below.
965/265 was released around March 2023 with the 965 having 32gb to support maps, etc, vs 265 with 8gb since there's no map capability. Both 965/265 have many of the same features including built-in running dynamics and AMOLED. The big difference 965/265 is there are no maps on 265. DCRainmaker's review of 265 indicated he likes the 265 and said it was suitable for his daily use except for the handful of times when he really needed a map. Price on 265 has been down to $350 IIRC, quite often, lately.
DCRainMaker preferred the Epix over Fenix 7 because of the AMOLED display. Fenix 7 (and particularly, 7X) is all about long battery life….kinda ridiculously long…. But again, 7X has the flashlight. Epix Gen 2 is simply less battery life (due to AMOLED) when compared to Fenix 7 models.
Battery life longest to shortest: Fenix, then idk between Epix vs 965, then 265 definitely the shortest (but still 5-10x longer than things like Apple Watches that generally need daily charging).
I will try to update this comment when I have a chance to look at and identify the main differences between the above models versus Fenix 8 and the "pro" series. Garmin is really making it difficult to keep up with so many iterations.
Edit 10/2: The big difference found on the PRO (7s/7/7X/Epix) is that they all have flashlights(7x is the only lesser model with flashlight). DCR indicates that software on the 7 Pro/Epix Pro will be given to existing Fenix 7/Epix models as an update to their prior software. Pro models have a new optical HR sensor (moot if you use chest strap). I assume Pros have better battery life vs their non-Pro counterparts. But honestly it doesn't look like much substantive aside from flashlight.
The Fenix 8 encompasses the 7-Pro (now called 8 Solar… if the name has 8 and solar, it is MIPS) and the Epix Pro (Fenix 8 *without* solar = AMOLED). All Pros have flashlight. Notable additions include a speaker and some ability to do stuff using your voice (generally need a phone nearby, however; eg, the watch cannot make phone calls by itself); other notable addition is some stuff for scuba divers. DCR was nonplussed by the speaker/voice capabilities. I didn't even bother reading his review of Scuba stuff because it's not an activity I've ever done nor care about. So the Fenix 8 seems like a big increase in price for stuff that won't benefit many people aside from scuba divers.
Still a great price for a great watch, but be aware or the weight.
Also on a side note, anyone who is waiting for this deal needs to write "fēnix" and not "fenix" in their alerts. Friggin stupid.

The Garmin fēnix 7 and fēnix 7 Pro series are both part of Garmin's high-end multisport GPS watches, but the Pro version introduces some enhancements over the base fēnix 7. Here's a breakdown of the key differences:
1. Flashlight
fēnix 7 Pro: Includes a built-in LED flashlight (white and red light) for visibility during activities like running in the dark or camping.
fēnix 7: Does not have a built-in flashlight.
2. Upgraded Display
fēnix 7 Pro: Higher contrast MIP (memory-in-pixel) display, which improves readability in various lighting conditions.
fēnix 7: Standard MIP display.
3. Heart Rate Sensor
fēnix 7 Pro: Features the Elevate 5.0 heart rate sensor, which is an updated sensor for improved accuracy during intense workouts.
fēnix 7: Uses the previous generation Elevate 4.0 heart rate sensor.
4. Performance Metrics
fēnix 7 Pro: Includes additional advanced performance metrics like Hill Score and Endurance Score, which are designed to measure your ability to sustain effort on hilly terrain and your overall endurance.
fēnix 7: Does not include these specific metrics but does have a wide range of performance metrics.
5. Solar Charging Efficiency
fēnix 7 Pro: The Pro model has more efficient solar charging panels, resulting in slightly longer battery life when using solar charging.
fēnix 7: Solar charging is available in solar variants, but less efficient compared to the Pro model.
6. Battery Life
fēnix 7 Pro: Due to improved solar charging and efficiency, the Pro variant has a slightly longer battery life under similar conditions.
fēnix 7: Still offers excellent battery life but typically less than the Pro in solar-powered modes.
7. Preloaded Maps
fēnix 7 Pro: Comes preloaded with all global maps (Topographical, Ski, and Golf courses) without the need for a separate download.
fēnix 7: Requires users to download maps for specific regions based on their needs.
8. Mapping and Navigation
fēnix 7 Pro: Features enhanced map layers, including weather overlays, allowing users to see weather patterns directly on the map during navigation.
fēnix 7: Does not include these advanced weather overlays but has standard mapping and navigation features.
9. Training Readiness
fēnix 7 Pro: Introduces Training Readiness, a new feature to help athletes assess how ready their body is for intense training based on a variety of factors.
fēnix 7: Does not include the Training Readiness feature but does offer Body Battery and other health metrics.
10. Design and Materials
fēnix 7 Pro: Available in more premium materials such as Sapphire Solar variants, offering better scratch resistance and durability.
fēnix 7: Also has premium options, but the Pro versions often include a broader range of material choices.
11. Multiband GPS
fēnix 7 Pro: Multiband GNSS support is available across all Pro models, enhancing GPS accuracy in difficult environments (like urban canyons or dense forests).
fēnix 7: Multiband GNSS is available, but only in the Sapphire Solar models.
Summary:
fēnix 7 Pro offers several upgrades, including an LED flashlight, better display contrast, enhanced solar charging, the latest heart rate sensor, and new performance metrics (Hill Score, Endurance Score). It also comes preloaded with maps, supports weather overlays, and provides improved GPS accuracy across all models.
fēnix 7 is still a powerful, feature-rich watch but lacks some of the latest enhancements present in the Pro version.

I am sure, this season, we will see better deals on Epix 2 Pro which is everything Fenix 8 AMOLED less speaker and scuba screen.
