Is this the cheapest the H2 has been this year?

I looked at the specs and I think it's a fine setup, but nothing remarkable. The components seem to be microSHIFT which is a fine alternative to more expensive (and probably better in many aspects) Shimano and SRAM. That said, I've seen reviews of the microSHIFT components being bulletproof because they don't compete on lightness. 8 speed shifter means that it's good for easy commuting but I wouldn't take it to a trail or anything. I don't know how wide they can go tire-wise, but a light wheel setup with fat tires could be an easy upgrade path that could have you traveling in comfort.

Things like name brand really doesn't matter very much if you're looking for something to putter around. These kind of bikes can be the "+1" bike for even serious cyclists as something they can get on real quick to go to the store or something and not worry about the expensive (and they can be very expensive, like 50x more) getting damaged or stolen.

These seem to the same as the Kent H1 and H2 sale from March this year.
I bought the step through H1 for 160$. Unbelievably light bike. Small was good for my kids. And works perfectly for street riding. You will need to change the tires for any kind of trail riding. Assembly is a little tricky with routing the brake cable. You should read the Kent thread from March - lots of users posted their assembly tips.

Shockingly good value on these bikes, particularly ordering through Mendham who will refund part or all of the cost to have your order assembled at a shop (in my area this service costs anywhere from $75-$125 but YMMV). If you're comfortable DIYing you could pick up the H1 and put the savings towards some name-brand brakes and/or a groupset upgrade but if not definitely spend the extra $30 on the H2 - it's impossible to overstate what a difference hydraulic disc brakes make over cheap cable-pulled mechanicals.

Trek would charge you roughly $800 for this spec, so you do the math. Smilie

For offroad, yes, hydraulic are way better. No contest. But for road riding, it's not a big deal IMO. The one disadvantage of hydraulic is they can very easily develop air pockets in the lines if you place the bike in any position other than both wheels down.

Can't see any difference between the H1 and H2 aside from the 8 vs. 9 speed drivetrain. Anything else I'm missing?
