Get these headphones, they're amazing, but DO NOT update to the latest firmware from 1-2 months ago. People are reporting en-masse about the headphones shutting off randomly with a popping sound.
I've seen this behavior since the moment I updated. The pop is so loud sometimes it end up quickly taking my headphones off and throwing on desk. It's so startling.
There is absolutely no QA at Sony for their firmwares.

I get the random shut off since I got the headphones from secondipity through eBay. Sometimes it would shut off in 30 minutes of use, sometimes 2 hours, sometimes never in that session. I sent it into Allstate(?) for warranty repair. They said they opened, cleaned it, and it is working again. With the problem being so random, I don't see how they can be certain it is working again unless the tech sits there and use my headphones in multiple 2-3 hour long sessions.
Needless to say, I still have the same shut off problem, although it seems to not happen as often as before I sent it in. I definitely did not update to the firmware you mentioned myself and I sent it into Allstate several months ago. I'm still trying to understand what the deal is.

Open box can imply someone opened it and used it. They have no way to know unless they test it and fix it if there's a problem. That's likely why. You can certainly get an open box that is practically new or an open box where someone licked the headphones and dropped it in the toilet.
