I will give a bit of advice specific to streamers and videographers ONLY: this camera has significant overheating issues with video. Even streaming out clean HDMI, no recording, and dummy battery power wasn't getting me anywhere close to an hour of decent runtime.

Good price. It'll be better around Black Friday. It was $899 back in Jan 2024 and once in the summer of 2024. Could it go down to $799 around Black Friday 2024? Maybe. If it does, I may buy one. (Or the R6 II if that gets and all-time low Refurb price that's more enticing.)

Great camera.

The R8 Mark II will be coming out mid 2025 most likely. (The R6 Mark III is rumored to be ready already, launching late this year or in early 2025. The R8 Mark II should follow (less than) six months after.) The AF and video features will likely improve in line with the R5 II. That is to say the improvements for stills shooters won't be massive, mainly just even better AF. Once the R8 II comes out, I predict the price on the Refurb R8 to go down to $799 or even $699 around Black Friday 2025. Of course, it's not worth waiting a year for a $100 price drop.

We are spoiled for choice at great prices!

Love my r8, every once in a while it struggles to find focus in wildlife or sports photography with bigger zoom lenses, which was surprising given its sensor.

I was just looking at these. I brought my 40d, that I haven't used in years (or any photography other than my phone) to my son's soccer tournament. Even using manual mode w/ AF, so many shots failed to take. Granted, I'm rusty, but I bet tech that isn't 17 years old would have helped loads.

Just returned from Namibia last week. I agree. It really likes focusing on debris when the system claims it seeks out animals. Found myself using the manual focus quite a lot with the R8. Brought an R10 as a backup and it had less issues. Both with the larger more expensive lenses.

Actually, I had been able to record 4K internally for about 1.3 hours with dummy battery power. It was indoors at a banquet hall, and it did not overheat. I did not try to do clean HDMI out tho.

Seems lots of Canon's have this issue. Got the R50 during the Spring deal and brought it to the comic-con where it overheated doing video. We were outdoors where it was hot, FWIW. But fortunately, I also brought my Sony a7rIII which was up to the task.

FWIW I was getting counter offers of $1075 from greentoe a couple weeks ago. That includes tax so it would likely be cheaper than this after tax for a brand new one. Worth a shot if you're in the market for one.

Thanks for the info. I thought I took a screen shot of the price, but it was 999. I thought I had seen 899. Anyway I want a low light performer amd want to sale the 80D. R6 would even be better around the same price.

Just checked prices. Laughed at the RP at 649. It's 548 at big green. Buy it now price. I was thinking about that.

Get the R8 when it goes back down to $899. I think it'll be $799 soon. The R8 has one of
Canon's best AF systems, a very modern sensor. A no brainer above the RP. I would pick it over eth R6 Mark I as well. If there is a good deal on the R6 II, that's my first choice. The R8 is my second choice. I can live with the R8's compromises vis-a-cis the R6 II.

Of course, seeing what the R6 III and the R8 II will be like would be helpful. But that would likely require waiting one more year. (Which I may do as I have too many cameras as it is. Smilie )
