Shows replace original music for a number of reasons, including licensing issues, the need to secure rights for home video releases, and the desire to use more contemporary music:
Licensing issues: Streaming services often change the music on shows due to licensing issues. For example, much of the original music for Dawson's Creek was replaced for distribution on Netflix, including the theme song.
Home video releases: Shows that didn't secure the necessary music rights for home video releases may have some or all of the contemporary music replaced. For example, WKRP in Cincinnati had most of its contemporary music replaced with generic substitutes.
Using more contemporary music: Shows may replace original music with more contemporary music.
Title sequences are an important part of establishing a show's identity. They are repeated at the beginning of each episode and can become highly memorable.
