Failed to mention Via 24 monthly bill credits like always!
I'm on simple choice and I qualified. Already traded in two phones. One for a 9 pro xl and one for a regular 9. If you go to the product page and try from there it's gonna keep trying to add a line for the promo. You have to go to the number's profile and select upgrade from there.

anyone know if tmobile starts to charge the monthly charge right away?
I placed an order but the xl is backordered until mid January.
Wondering if they will start billing right away...

also, if we have the device on hand, can we take it to a corp store right away in order to start getting the credits? or will that just cause problems

thanks

Just be patient. You won't be charged for taxes until it ships, nor will you be charged the monthly payments. And you only have to send in the trade-in 30 days after receiving the new phone

Anyone heard back from tmobile after they shipped the item and got confirmation email received, how long it takes to know they have accepted the trade in device?

Mine was received by them on Friday. It shows in the portal as correctly assessed this morning.

The phone is factory unlocked before first boot. During first boot, it runs the TMO config (preloaded for phone with TMO SKU) to carrier lock it. After I installed GrapheneOS, it remains carrier unlocked. For stock, a few people reported SIM re-locked after factory reset, which I think it's the expected behavior from the preloaded TMO config.

Not very often unless you are on the expensive plans.

Just activate like you are switching device (easier with physical SIM) or you don't have to activate them at all if you don't want to.
Do you have an info on if this carrier lock/bootloader lock can be undone after the fact?

I should have researched more before turning the phone on the first time. I was completely unaware of this possibility so I booted the phone and slipped my T-Mobile SIM into the tray. So now bootloader unlock is grayed out and the phone is carrier locked.

I'm not so concerned about the carrier lock, but I would have liked the opportunity to mess around with non-stock OS. Do I have to wait 2 years until the carrier lock expires?

I have no idea what "black logo" means. These were listed T-Mobile stores on their page.

EDIT: Oh, do you mean the circle T on the map? If so, yes, they were all corporate stores.

The darker T is likely to be corp store vs. light colored T

Just to add my experience, I have a Simple Choice family plan from ~2 decades ago.

I took advantage of the promo online for the reg Pixel 9. I ordered it on Thanksgiving so I was too early for the Pixel bud add-on. Oh well, would be nice. I received the phone early the next week

I looked over the Pixel for a week and then turned in my pristine S9. It's interesting that ebay sells old S9s specific for T-Mobile tradeins for ~$100, which probably have the bare minimum requirements (no water damage, no cracked screen, turns on and stays on).

Because these trade-in deals have issues with accepting the old phone way more often than you'd want (I've personally experienced it myself), I went to my local Corporate Tmobile store. It seems there's a lot of variation with this tactic. Maybe I was fortunate, but I was greeted by an assistant regional manager who knew exactly how to accept the trade-in. He confirmed my account, took a photo of my ID, printed out a receipt, and I was out in ~10 minutes, no upselling. Still, I'll confirm my next bill to make sure it all went through correctly, with no purchase cramming/slamming.

After looking through the XDA forums, I discovered that without the carrier unlock, there's no bootloader unlocking. Since that will take 2 years, I'm just going to make the best of it with the stock OS and some ADB/root-like workarounds. Given the strict limitations and loss of integrity flags MEETS_STRONG_INTEGRITY, MEETS_DEVICE_INTEGRITY, or MEETS_BASIC_INTEGRITY, I'm too old to play the constant cat/mouse battle to keep banking apps, etc. functioning.

Were those Corporate stores or Authorized Retailers?
Corporate stores should have zero problems with this.

https://www.t-mobile.com/stores/locator
Corporate stores have a Black logo.

Thank u..went to my nearest store and they took the old phone in five minutes

Same here, this will be my first unrooted phone in a while.
It was getting old keeping everything working and certain apps like FordPass and Optum RX, just for example, still no longer worked when rooted.
Unlocking the bootloader alone downgrades Widevine L1 to L3, which means Netflix and other DRM apps only play in 480p SD.
The main things I even rooted for can be done now without it.
