Doubtful American, Delta, United would say anything. Cant speak for the others. Have you flown lately? You should see the size of things people haul on. International carriers can be different. If you dont have an earlier boarding during busy times you can be gate checked anyone on some flights.

I feel that you don't sound professionally but judging if not talking down by saying "Have you flown lately?"
I in fact fly almost every other week and I have early boarding for all airlines. I don't pay attention nor I'm willing to waste my time and energy on the things or size that people have with them.
I indicated friendly with policy of different airlines r/g carry on so that we all can be aware or advised. There might be some aception to policy but most likely it was done by the people's gut feelings or laziness at the front desk
