I own a few low price HP laptops over the years. Most of them have terrible batteries, but the hard drives and memory can be upgraded.
I still use 2019 era HP laptop and desktop with 32G DDR4 RAM and 1T ssd. If I am buying another laptop, I will definitely look for the upgrade options.

Chase's offer expires Nov 30. The credit card charge must be posted by Nov 30 to get the $50.
HP charges the credit card on the same day usually after the order is processed instead of shipping day.
I placed an order on Nov 22 and the charge was posted on Nov 24 with transaction day being Nov 22. So it should be fairly safe if the order is placed by today 11/29.
The laptop I ordered is still being assembled in China and not yet shipped...
As to this deal, not too bad and I highly recommend spending the extra 50 to upgrade to FHD. I bought a very similar laptop last year with the same 250 nit FHD and a CPU of similar horsepower(Ryzen 5 7530U) for about $50 less. It would be roughly the same price after the $50 rebate from Chase. At least close to no inflation on this one.

I've checked all 5 of my chase cards and didn't see the $50 offer ... which card did you find it on? TIA!

Hmm. I don't know. Maybe it's too late to add it. I added those like a month ago if I remember correctly and have it on many different cards including
Freedom, Marriot Bold (no fee version),
Sapphire Preferred, Amazon Visa. Only cards that do not have this are Chase Freedom Unlimited.

Regarding upgrades, make sure not to pick the models like 16t-af000 or 16t-ac000.
Those with models with -a do not support memory upgrades.
If in doubt you can search for the models on Crucial.com to verify.
But it's in dual-channel, and it can be upgraded unlike many laptops.
The build quality sounds like a worse problem, like the touchpad.
My experience with 17z-cp300 from last year was pretty good. Build quality is solid especially for the price paid.
It depends on your use case. For my use case the touchpad is almost never used because for a 17" I use it only at home with a mouse. The portability is not good enough to me for any use outside of home. I only move it between rooms if ever. For 14" or 15" for work or school that's a different case. Maybe touchpad would be used more often if I take one of those on a flight.
I have an HP Elitebook at work that costs 1000+ but I still don't like the touchpad and rarely use it...

You can upgrade screen to 1920x1080 for +$50 and upgrade RAM to 16GB for $80
Can also upgrade i5 to i7 and SSD size. Hmmm after upgrades might still be an overall good buy ?
Probably not. Just get a better quality laptop. Low end HP consumer laptops are not known for their durability or longevity.
The processor is not bad BUT... HP build quality is subpar.
I made the mistake of purchasing the HP 17z-ca300
Performance was decent but the outer casing starter disintegrating within months. The plastic was brittle and of course the metal hinges glued to plastic.
What has better build quality with recent processor and on deal?
I am not following the current trend and my dell latitude is 7 yo, still running good, giving to a kid and need to upgrade.

Chase just refreshed the offers and I see the same HP 50 off 299 on every card now including Chase Freedom Unlimited. You can check again. The new deal is good until 12/31.

It depends. I had one that died within one year due to bad thermal design. It resulted in a class action lawsuit so HP gave me a low-end $250 laptop as a replacement.
After that HP seemed to have improved and I had g7-2235dx and 17-e019dx both lasted for more than 10 years. (bought in mid-2013 to Jan 2014) Those two are still technically working but are too slow by my standards.

The generic retail line is only part of what HP makes. Try an elitebook sometime. They hold up well against most manufacturer.
But I agree, the retail models are junk. I got one of these 17s a couple of years ago and the keyboard locks in shift, or sometimes ctrl/alt/fn depending. It's also poorly built. It has started behaving better of late but it's already pretty rough.

You cannot upgrade the CPU or the Graphics chip . There soldered in .
Not a complaint at this price but looks like there's only room for one m2 drive so if you upgrade you'd need to hook something external up (old fashioned dock for ssd drives if you have a spare sitting around and make an image using say Macrium Reflect free version or AOEMI or usb m2 reader to clone the m2 drives over to the bigger one)
Hmm, it worked on the 16" laptop for 399.99. Guess it has to be over a certain amount.
Doesn't work on this laptop at $399.99 either ( current price went up to $350 + I did the $50 FHD screen upgrade ) , so either the coupon is expired or product-specific, not price specific.
