Amazon has the 4 GB version for that price not the 8 GB
Shipping is $5.99
The 5 is the first Pi I haven't bought. I was willing to give them a lot of leeway for being so publicly favorable to linux, open source, etc. But after so many iterations of broken hardware, broken drivers, and features that never worked right I moved on. Compare a full Pi 5 against a N100 mini pc and you're gonna get more with the x86 option... and it just works.

Wish MC had advertised this promo before I finally decided to buy this 8GB RPi5 [aliexpress.us] from AliExpress last week.

That's Microcenter's website for ya
Love MicroCenter but laugh when I see their staff struggling with 15-year+ computing infrastructure. My last computer quote was a screenshot because they couldn't source toner for their old printer. I guess they cut corners to provide value to customers.

How's the power consumption on the N100?
I think the difference is AT BEST for the pi, 8 watts or so at idle? So all of $1 a month difference?. And that is assuming a pi with just SD card storage, which is inferior significantly to anything on a mini PC.

For home assistant, I use an odroid. There is literally nothing I can think of that I would use a pi 5 for. And I have bought at least 10 earlier pis, pi2, pi3s and a pi 4 over the years.

They are just a dumb combination of hardware at a terrible price point. I don't need constant upgrades to the computing capability, video capability, and dual 4k screens, with stupid micro HDMI dongles. If I wanted to spend $100 on a mini PC, I would expect much better IO capability in 2024.

I just bought an N95 MPC for $100 w/ 8gb and 256gb and it idles at 7-8W. I put kubuntu on it with no undervolting or games. I have 3 more in a harvester cluster. 24W idle for 3 (N100). The N95/N100/N97 for server duties are fungible, cheap, powerful. On load it will go up over ARM but we are talking pennies here.

The nice thing about the MPC is that after you put all the stuff together it is faster and cheaper than Rpi because you need to add power, cooling, storage, case.

The only reason you may want an RPI is if you want to use GPIO, outside of that I would find it real hard to justify a gen 5 which now really needs active cooling or you have an app that only runs on raspbian which is just debian. To that end bookworm has had a bunch of stability issues so even there you may want to wait to update. I just put mine aside to play with.

Unless you absolutely need it to be this size, you can spend a little more and buy a refurbished dell optiplex with way better performance running linux.

The pi's value is on the GPIO port, if you don't need it, you can find better mini pc or android box.

You can add GPIO via USB/serial for $5. Tons of boards out there. Of course the data rate will be slower than the native GPIO on the Pi. But for most hobby/tinkering use cases , it's sufficiently fast enough.

These things are ridiculously priced, by the time you purchase all the required accessories you'd be better off buying a used mini PC.

I think this is good price if you want portability of the RPi. I have RPi running enviro+ to monitor the air and running BirdNet-Pi to identify birds coming to my bird feeder. If you want to run something like Plex or seed box machine or docker containers, there are better machines for it (and for not much more money).
Can you plz share the envirno+ air monitoring design.

You can do something like this. RPi 5 will probably be overkill for it as pizero is way more than enough for it.

Thanks, I reached a similar conclusion about a year ago... since then (when I bought my N100) I have finally found my peace of mind...

ya n100 or 95 is fine for alot of the things most will do.. and more stable.. i run a rasp 3 & 4 as well as 1 n100 and i can tell ya the n100 runs best way more stable.. the two rasps are good for open vpn and wiregaurd and some light plex setup but outside of that i think the n100 is more stable
