Is that worse than not shipping ala MC?

I see Central does warranty OEM tray CPUs for 3 years, but note that they are the OEM so you must submit a warranty claim through Central (if they're still around... Microcenter is returning to the bay area and I assume retail is already hard) and then Central works to obtain a replacement from AMD. Not sure if that process would be easier or harder than working with AMD directly which is already a bit of a pain usually.

Given that 2 of my 5 AMD CPUs since Zen 2 have needed warranty replacement, definitely a consideration.

When you take shipping into account, this is only like $10 cheaper than buying a retail box with 3 year AMD warranty.

2 of 5. 3900x had a CCD go bad. System would only go past BIOS with CCD 1 disabled. 5950x didn't necessarily "go bad", but when I started running all-core workloads all day -- with BIOS set to defaults -- I would get WHEA errors and system instability. All components in the system had previously worked fine with a 5800X3D including constant all-core workloads.

perhaps a PSU or RAM issue? Some mobos also need BIOS updates to function properly with generational CPU upgrades.

The 3900x system worked perfectly fine with a replacement 3900x from AMD. The 5950x system worked perfectly fine with a 5800X3D on all-core workloads. RAM isn't overclocked (even EXPO) and PSU is A-tier and again worked fine with 5800X3D. That's around 110w all-core vs 140w all-core loads with no GPU load, so very small power consumption difference. Motherboard does have latest BIOS, but 5800X3D is newer than 5950x. Asus X470-F, so not an old board for that CPU generation.

Interesting. I'm on an Asrock Taichi X470 myself. Upgrade from 2600 to 5700x3d, and everything has been smooth thus far. The 5950x definitely is a beast compared to the 5800x3d, and there might be something along the way that causes instability. Even if you have an A-tier PSU, you could be at its limits? As the power draw is the most significant differentiator between these two chips. The x3d chips are really efficient.
