I did get a 504. And then took it back. It's off axis is terrible. If you look at the data, which I linked and go down to the horizontal globe plot, you'll see a massive degradation of sound pressure once you move a few feet to the left and right of the speaker.
That's why this isn't a slick deal. The center channel is roughly the most important and there are structural issues that can't be mitigated. It's their weakest performing speaker. I don't have anything bad to say about the rest of their line.
I went with an SVS because the performance horizontally was a massive improvement. And that's what you want out of a center: clear dialogue wherever you sit

Get the SVS prime center ($399 or probably cheaper) or ultra center (799) if you want something better.

I have tested all sorts of center channels in my set up for years and I have yet to hear one that was better then the 450/504 centers until I went >$1K.. I not sure about the "paper" test specs, etc however by all my years of listing to audio/HT, I have not heard anything that sounded clearer or reproduced voices as good as this until I went much higher $$$. In particular how it can handle low male voices with such precision & impact is very rare to find in a center at this price point, others simply can not handle that and reproduce those frequencies accurately but not a problem w/ the 450/504. Sound is so objective where it does not matter to most what a test paper says.. Just my 3 cents..

can I stand this vertically to mitigate the supposed off axis issues of MMTMM center?
can I stand this vertically to mitigate the supposed off axis issues of MMTMM center?
Basically the center channel is a sideways bookshelf . Part of the reason it's done that way is because most people have to put the center in under their TV (most dont have an accousically transparent screen and projector). But at the same time you want to try and minimize the distance between the speaker and the screen so the audio feels like it is coming from the screen.
If you have the ability to put a center speaker upright (which is generally a beefy speaker and maybe 25-30% bigger than a bookshelf) you could consider buying another bookshelf, preferably one that matches your L/R but it's more difficult to execute in practice.
Is that helpful?
