Over the years I have come to the conclusion that the old fashioned fabric kind soft shell are much better and durable in long run than most hard shell (be it abs or polycarbonate)

That's because abs or polycarbonate isn't meant for durability, it is meant for weight reduction while still has decent durability.

In my case swissgear has been great compared to Samsonite and other none brand , i probably had 20+ international flight with swissgear still going , Samsonite been good but beatens up fast , other brand is nonebrand are garbage 2 flight breaks.
