I'll disagree here, and that's as an owner of an M1 Pro 14" MBP and a Thinkpad T15 (work).

Sure, I prefer the design of the MacBook, but my Thinkpad is near bulletproof as well. And in this case, the OLED screen is going to be similar in quality to the MBP, except refresh rate.

Where Apple to me is really falling behind is included SSD. There is zero reason a $2000 laptop only has 512GB and it's $200 more to upgrade.

Not to mention all the additional nuisances that MacOS has and the walled garden. I bought mine used for $1200 1.5 years ago, but there's no way I'd spend $1600-2k new on them when machines like this exist.
Is 64gb not enough? Yeah, i don't like that it's soldered here but you really can't get any better than this. I do wish it was 120Hz also. Their 14 inch ones have it.

This seems like a great deal on a pretty awesome laptop. The integrated 780m performa better than the dedicated (but worthless) mx550 in my 2 year old laptop.

Such a great deal. I'm also considering the TP with the Ultra 185h, but not sure it's worth the extra $1K https://www.lenovo.com/us/vipmemb...21kv001eus

Is it an overkill to have 16" WQUXGA (3840 x 2400) OLED screen? Will it drain the battery fast? I am just looking to use this as a productivity laptop with heavy excel spreadsheets/models etc.

I have this but last gen. It's my daily driver and love it. Performance is good. I usually have Chrome/Firefox with 100+ tabs open, Thunderbird, Word/Excel, viewing PDF, and occasional photo/video app all running smoothly. I think 16" screen size is perfect. Not ultraportable but it doesn't feel heavy. Screen is bright and enough for outdoor. Other things I like include numpad on side, Ethernet port, two USB-C and USB-A ports.

There are cons/quirks. Sometimes will not wake up from sleep. HDMI port not secure and disconnects with slight cable movement. The most annoying is unreliable trackpad responses (single finger regular movements goes wonkers and becomes multi-finger). Found out not good for video editing. That is, no hardware acceleration so for Handbrake or DaVinci Resolve is slow.

The WiFi card on this laptop is crap. Cannot reliably connect to my 5GHz network. I have a Unifi dream router and never had any problems with other devices using the 5GHz WiFi.

You want IPS for productivity/desktop-work, OLED strengths are wasted on it. Text is usually crisper on IPS

If you're using Linux disable band steering and 2.4GHz client side.

FYI. Soldered RAM. 60hz screen.
Soldered wifi, wifi has major bugs in Linux. Don't buy, if you bought it for Linux - return.
I've had this crap laptop for a year - never again would get one with soldered wifi.

Thanks for this post. I was 90% of the way to purchasing this deal from yesterdays front page for a P14s ThinkPad

https://slickdeals.net/f/17977488-lenovo-thinkpad-p14s-ryzen-7-pro-8840hs-14-fhd-ips-32gb-ddr5-1tb-ssd-709?page=9&src=frontpage&prop=&attrsrc=#comments

That one is only $709 but 14" and 32GB ram and non OLED screen. I was really wanting 15"+ so I could work more efficiently on it and the 64GB ram vs 32GB, 3840 x 2400 res on this vs the 1920 x 1200 on the 14" and 86Wh battery vs 52.5Wh battery on the 14" sealed the deal. I think the screen size and res, battery, and 32GB extra ram (though its soldered on this model but at 64GB who cares) makes it worth $320 more than the other deal.

The only thing that would have made this perfect is a touch screen but other than that for those shopping for a ThinkPad at this size this is a killer deal. This will be an upgrade from a 2016 13" Dell XPS 13 for me with only 8GB ram so this will be an insane upgrade and actually allow me to work remote comfortably!

I know its the slim variant, but shame they couldnt pack the HS cpu version into this 16" frame. It would fit a bigger fan / heatsink than the p14.
