For those not versed in bike:

This has an entry level, but dependable group (shimano tourney). It's a 3x7, so it will have good mid range for most casual riders. The front fork is cheap, but it'll be more comfortable than a hard fork. The bike has hydro disk brakes, which will stop very well. WTB makes a decent saddle (seat). 27.5 is a good size for cross country tires. The post is a common size and easy to add a suspension seat post. All in all, it's on par with the ~$400 diamondback bikes that Costco carries on and off. It's a solid, dependable bike at this price. Better than almost anything else you'll find new for $400. REI bikes are made by Giant (who makes bikes for dozens of other companies too). If you want to go ride on the gravel paths around you, this will work great. If you plan to get into downhill and more technical riding, buy an older trek fuel for around the same price
Not a bad bike to test the waters and see if you like mountain biking.

But DO NOT buy this with plans of upgrading it. It has a straight steerer tube and QR wheels, which are a dead end upgrade-wise.
Hey, did you miss the price ? Perhaps this bike isn't good enough for you, but it is to people that the $420 price makes it within reach.

The guys saying this is trash are probably the same guys riding $1k+ bikes I constantly pass on the trail while I'm riding my DRT 1.1 I bought a few years ago. This bike is great unless you are a hardcore mountain biker doing the slickrock trail in Moab, jumps, or bombing down inclines. For easy to moderate trails this bike is fine.

This bike is not great even for the sale price. The Walmart ozark trail ridge is a better actual mountain bike and costs less. I would say if your mechanically inclined at all and want a mountain bike, your better off getting the ozark trail. Just keep in mind a Walmart employee put it together so bolt check everything. If you are not comfortable working on a bike or just want a bike to ride then the rei service this comes with would be really hard to beat.

Bought this bike in spring of 2020 for my son and it's been reliable. Our biggest gripe has been the very wide handlebars. It is like they use the same size of handlebar, regardless of frame size.

Tektro auriga, shimano tourney and 100mm suntours are a thing of the past 20 years.

Bike is of course good enough for beginner but it would be well priced at 200-250.

For this price i expect shimano deore accessories.

I've always seen handlebars as something that I cut down to size when I get a new bike or a new set of bars. Just another adjustment when setting up a bike.

Pipe cutters are just a few bucks on Amazon or at the hardware store.

True, and the Ozark Trail looks better.

Yeah, this isn't a great bike for beginners. Chances are, the experience will be so sub-par that you'll end up quitting after just a few rides and swear off MTB'ing forever. Think of it like getting a super cheap slow computer. Sure, it'll load a browser after 15 seconds and a browser tab 5 seconds later, you may need to restart daily, but the experiene isn't going to be so great.

I don't get the appeal of the Ozark but IMO this DRT is a pretty great starter bike... I got one in 2020 so I could ride away the pandemic though I have upgraded to a Diamondback since then. I put a lot of miles on it mainly riding through the urban woods.

You're paying a lot for the REI service here, which varies, but will be better than a big box store or DIY for someone not mechanically inclined.
The bike itself is no better (arguably worse) than the giordanos that have been going around at half the price though.

IMO the frame is really ugly. Looks a bit feminine with the odd curve.

32lbs! Yikes!

Very low end components. Won't be fun to work on.

IMHO if it were me i would cruise marketplace or cl and find a good used bike that may need a tune up... but you need to fix your own and that's not everyone....

Have one. Like it. But I'm not a bike snob like those who will undoubtedly rush to post in the thread.
