I wished Gabe wasn't so scared and just released it with oled ready to go for the first gen... Or least provided a way to buy a part to replace the LCD with an oled

I don't think gen 2 is coming before late 2026 and I use the Deck every day.
Only thing making me lean towards getting it is the battery life, that I want to support Steam/Valve, and that SteamOS is better than what the ROG and Legion have.

The SteamDeck, while it lower specs the battery last longer, thus why I tend to take this one on the road. SteamOS makes it feel like a gaming device while giving you the flexibility of switching to desktop mode.
Also worth mentioning all the hardware issues the ROG Ally has and the poor customer service Asus has when it comes to warranty claims.
On a similar point, based on previous experience with Valve/Steam I know for sure they will be supporting the SteamDeck for a long time. Asus on the other hand my experience is that they tend to drop support of their products and leave customers hanging. Specially if the product sales don't do too well or they lose the market.
If I had to choose one again I would go with the Steamdeck mostly because I'm biased towards wanting Valve, Steam, and SteamOS become a strong competitor and gain more market. Also because I know Valve and the community will keep this device alive for a long time.
If both were exactly the same price and a friend was asking for a recommendation I would probably say got with an ROG Ally though.
My buddy has a steam deck that I used a few times, but I opted to buy an ally x because I felt it was just to late in the life cycle of the steamdeck to pick one up now. I swapped the ssd in the Ally x and dual boot bazzite and windows to get the best of both worlds, but it took ~3 days of downloading/installing/tweaking to get everything running the way I wanted it. My wife also has a thunderbolt dock with an ultrawide monitor so I can just use it like a little PC for non gaming tasks too.
