What's a good alternative to this one?

I'm familiar with the ls800 because my brother has it, but now my dad's interested in UST too, but probably doesn't need to spend extra for an ls800
You could grab the Hisense PL1 for cheaper if your father is planning on 120" or less in a light controlled room or wait for the PL2 to go on sale. If you need something now, this is not a bad option at all.

How long do these typically last, and are they serviceable?
Laser projectors last about 20k-30k hours. That's 8 hours a day 5 days a week for 10 years. Substantially better than the older lamp projectors. Imo worrying about lifespan on a laser projector is not necessary

nexigo aurora pro is a solid choice about $1000 less than the ls800. I think the Epson ust's are crap for anything other than brightness. I myself ordered a Hisense px3 pro. Currently using a Hisense 100l5f. Because I use an Nvidia shield swapping out my ust is a cake walk.

I would probably pass unless you need a high lumen UST or are a gamer who cares more about input lag than refresh rate, in which case this is a no brainer. It does use a lot of the same technology as the LS800 which is one of the best options on the market right now.

The 3LCD chip is brighter but has less contrast than its competitors in the same class that are using DLP. It also offers less crisp of a picture imo. It wouldn't be my first choice if you're looking for something for movies.
Which model do you recommend for movies.

DLP projectors are notorious for having rainbow effect.

Triple Lazer is the way to go.
