I would not recommend getting this game on any console, or Steam, but especially not the Xbox because of all the stupid extra restrictions put on the Xbox version, like a special digital currency specific to the Xbox that you have to use for any DLC you want to buy. IIRC, you also have to use it to reup you monthly sub, sort of like how you have to do if you get it via Steam. It's not a terribly demanding game, so if you've got a halfway decent PC, get the Windows or Mac version. Despite all the talk about the graphics upgrade they did with Dawntrail, they didn't really bother updating most of the old art assets, so until you get into the Dawntrail content, you won't really see much difference.

That said, something else worth noting. Your account can be flagged for basically anything at any time and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. The "account review" team doesn't even have access to review the logs. Literally their entire job is to just lie to you and claim that they carefully reviewed everything and it was you who was a very naughty boy/girl and are being punished. Someone on the admin team could just select your account completely by mistake, because in a combo box of usernames it was right above or below the account they intended to select, and the "account review" people will swear up and down that yes you were very naughty. The whole thing is just a giant scam. They will refuse to even show you the logs, scrubbed of anything except your comments, claiming it's a "privacy" concern. If you're in the EU you can use GDPR, and in Calfornia the CCPA, to force them to cough up the logs, but they seem to go out of their way to make it difficult for you to submit the request.

Even worse, is read the ToS for the Square Enix forums. You can't say anything bad about Square Enix or its games. So, if you are incorrectly targeted and try to get some help with this issue, they'll just ban you. Meanwhile, they still let harassers and stalkers run rampant. Not to mention the developers are big on fan service. So, if you're into upskirting female characters with giant boobs, you're going to be in heaven. You can always spot the guys playing as a female character because they'll dress the character in the sluttiest looking outfit they can. Meanwhile, the relatively few female players have to deal with virtual sexual harassment.

The rest of the time, the chats in raids can frequently be pretty toxic. I remember one raid where the entire time a group of people were talking about farking another player in the ass. It wasn't just an isolated comment, it was a big 24-person raid which takes like 30ish minutes, and this went on the entire time. Then there's pretty much always someone who takes a comment the wrong way and decides to make a big deal out of it. There's the people who bitch if you don't play the way they want you to, which is even worse if you're playing as a tank or healer role. There are a lot of people who play as tanks that just abuse the healer, and a lot of healers who decide they want to be a DPS instead.

Then there's the ridiculous amount of paid DLC. You want a set of armor that doesn't look like total ass? Better be willing to pay for it! The prices are ridiculous too. Some of the DLC outfits are like 40USD, which is probably why they have regular "sales" of 50% off. Still, even 20USD is ridiculous.

Then there's the game itself. It's really not that great. It's just this giant mashup of ideas from previous Final Fantasy games and a main story that doesn't really even make sense. After a time you'll get to where you've memorized pretty much every single dungeon or raid and spend more of your time just chatting with other people than paying any attention to what's going on. Which is where someone will eventually report you for something and some poor Filipino call center worker who has like 5 seconds to read your comment and make a decision will probably just hit the button to penalize your account, which you can't ever actually challenge.

Realm Reborn through Endwalker is all one story, which is convoluted and full of huge gaping plot holes. They never explain a lot of things, contradict themselves all over the place, and the entire Heavensward and Shadowbringer expansions were like these annoying side stories. Then the less said about Endwalker the better because they took everything they'd been building towards for all the previous expansions, chucked it in the trash, and went off on some weird tangent. Dawntrail started off extremely slow, picked up a little about 3/4 of the way through, and then kind of fizzled at the end. Oh, right, and they seem to have more or less tried to retcon their whole Realm Reborn raid series about Bahmut. It won't show up in the roulette ever, so unless you have your own party, or do it unsynced much later, you'll never see it.

Starting with Heavensward they implemented this stupid system of having to find "aether currents" to be able to fly on your mount, and then because otherwise no one would ever do their FATE battles, they made it so you had to complete a certain number of those to be able to buy mount speed increases, which are all specific to a single map, naturally. The tribal/society quests are an exercise in repetition and tedium, probably best ignored unless you want the mount or emotes or something specific to it. Though the Dwarf one in Shadowbrings does have a few funny moments like how they have an alcohol beverage that doubles as a paint solvent. The Hildibrand stories are probably the one shining beacon in the mediocrity that is the game otherwise. They can be quite amusing, though the first series in Realm Reborn drags on a bit too long.

Anyway, to summarize, unless you have a group of people you want to play with, don't bother with this game. If you use the chat system at all, sooner or later someone will report you, but even if you never talk to a single other person in the game you could still find that you get a caution or even temporary ban and there's absolutely no way to ever challenge it. The game itself is pretty meh and really only stands out because other MMORPGs tend to suck even harder. And the Xbox version of the game has a lot of additional stupid restrictions that none of the others do. If you're going to get the game, get the Windows or Mac version, not Steam, not PS5, and definitely not Xbox.
