You want a mount that can hit 3 studs for large TVs, so you need one of the 34" wide mounting brackets, not a 20 or 28".
Studs are generally 16" on center, so attach the bracket to 3 studs (using 6 lag bolts), then slide the TV over to where you want it.
Although it's $6 more, spanning the load over 3 studs is worth it for the Harbor Freight:

(and yes, the box was printed before TVs over 70" were a thing; but I've used these on 89" TVs a bunch of times this past year)

If you are not "handy", you should have someone help you do this the first time; just so you can see how it's done.
This will require 2 "old work, double gang" boxes, because the holes they require will allow 2x4 scrap to be fed into it:

But the 3 stud mounts will probably give you 9+ inches of side to side adjustment room, and an easier mounting than installing backer boards.

But yes, 2 studs will hold a smaller TV, no problem (assuming a 'perfect' installation, meaning you actually hit the center of each stud, and used 3/8" or larger Lag Bolts, installed to a depth of 3" )
(The dimensions pic says it is 28" wide.)
