I agree but you still pretty much get what you pay for membership, and what are your options. Sam's club, BJs ? Agree that not everything is cheap at Costco so I decide what I need to buy at Walmart and other stores, and what from Costco.

Other than avacodo oil, can one of you two provide some concrete examples of what is cheaper/more expensive at Costco? I do feel that I drop too much money when shopping there, and my wife does all of the grocery shopping at local chains, so would love to know what I should avoid at Costco and get locally.
you drop too much money because the prices look good and so you end up buying more of stuff you generally wouldn't buy elsewhere. A box of cereal in a supermarket chain is like $5 and it's a small box. Costco has 3x quantity of that same cereal for $7. So you end up buying something in Costco you wouldn't buy elsewhere.

rice, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies (windex, bleach), etc., are all cheaper. It's simple mathematics and pricing... costco genuinely does get some of the best prices from manufacturers and because their gross margins are 10-15% on most products they sell, that means their customers pay less.

you might be able to find better deals for a specific few items in supermarket chains that they advertise to get you in the door but if you do all your shopping at one place, Costco makes the most sense.

We love Sam's ability to just walk in. Scan items via phone app. Pay via app. Walk out. Done!!!!

Honestly there are only a few non food items Costco is better for. Gas the same at eachbb vs it again easier to pay via app at Sam's and no or short line.
Gas is NOT the same as Costco is Top Tier and Sam's is not.

I find Costco just as easy to handle and they have even mastered the art of having self-checkouts AND regular checkout lanes BOTH fully staffed and anyone who shops at Sam's knows that doesn't happen there... So if you don't want a proprietary, non-free, user subjugating piece of software on your phone, but still want a convenient speedy checkout... stick with Costco.

To each their own. It's widely reported that Costco makes effectively no profit on the items they sell; the margins cover operating costs. The record profits are virtually all from membership fees.

Costco typically carries higher quality items which is why even if they aren't always the cheapest, they continue to retain and grow members.

Not true if you look at their income statements. The report last week states 7b in toal profit and 1.2b from membership fees. In fact, their membership renewals are down to 90% because of high prices/fees. I am no wizard, but clearly they are not living off of membership fees as you said.shake head

You are probably not doing your math based on grocery store loss leaders and sales. If you know how to shop, many items at Costco are more. The average totals on Costco receipts are way above average. I said target clientele - Costco has always been after the high-income earners. They want you spending thousands in there.
I have the advantage of being able to ship while working.
I price shop everything and not just per unit. But price per lb and/or per ounce.
There are many things I get at Costco that even on sale at grocery stores are never even close.
Frozen section:
Bagel bites. Grocery stores are never remotely close.
Frozen mixed veggies, edamame, taquitos. Ice cream bars (for parties like Nestle),
Somebl things are way cheaper at Costco unless grocery stores have a good sale that week (which I try to stock up on grocery store sales when possible but often it's limited 1 or 2 if a great sale)
Bacon. Hot dogs.
Lettuce (romaine) is less than half the price of my grocery store and once in awhile when grocery store has a great sale you can't exactly stock up.
Someone mentioned olive oil, honey, whipped cream, cream cheese, eggs (when my chickens arent laying enough) vitamins.
Dishwashing liquid is way cheaper.
Honestly if I could avoid it I would with the crowds, but I go during the week during work and I honestly save way more than grocery stores.

I'm confused by this statement. Everywhere I look online shows 7.4b total with 4.8b from memberships. ~3.6% operating margin (up from normally 2.5-3.2%)

Edit: found your mistake. You put q1 '25 memberships with fy '24's profits.

Costco is becoming less attractive to shop at every year. Couple that with ever increasing prices and ever increasing record profits, it's last on my list to shop at.
Cool, keep us updated.

Michelin Tires is only $40/60 off instead of $80/90 like previous sales...sigh. So sad I missed the weekend sam's deal on tires that had $150 off the same tires.

Anyone get the $350 HP Laptop that can provide a review on how it is?
Bough one for my wife to watch Asian drama and works just fine . It's not suitable for any gaming except for retro emulator. Battery starts decline in health after a year or so. Other than that a solid investment for secondary laptop

Gotta love the crazy fan boys who spill crap. Widely reported lol. Cosco cheap but not as cheap as making no profit. As someone worked retail that's a load of bull.

Gas is gas. Top tier lol. As far as convenient sams better. Also cosco annoying recently with the id scans on entering. Bottom line each had it own benefit as a customer you gotta use whats goos for you but sams 100% wins in convenience. There no argument unless you don't know how to use a smartphone.

Thanks OP. Always feels nice to see the item you bought is on sale and I have to go do pricematch! The customer service personnel will receive bunch of item codes from me this time, lol.
