Beef supply is under serious pressure. Lowest number of cattle in 60+ years. We are sleepwalking into a red meat crisis.
Depends on the quality you want I guess. My Heb and Kroger this week have "select" grade at around $4.47 to $4.77/lb which is the lowest grade. Choice is $13.99 here.
Most Albertson's/Safeway/Von's/Carr's have the roast for $4.99/lb, and Kroger/Fred Meyer for $5.47/lb. Seems like most all stores put 'em on sale before Christmas each year, check out other stores before paying more....

I've had the $4.99 roast from Safeway for thanksgiving. It was very good. I still have a 7lb roast in the freezer. Can't beat the price.

Check the cameras for Bill Gates and Greta Thunberg!

Is this globally or just US?
Costco sources beef from more than the US for their "Choice Quality" steaks.

You can usually count on Publix for having them at this price around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
And Easter.
This year, Thanksgiving near me had NY Strip roasts and not Ribeye for sale.

And for those who don't know...

Don't use the 500*F oven and 5min per pound method.

Use a digital thermometer and probe with alarm! They're like $20. Your roast is like $60 and you may ruin it.

I set the alarm at 123* for med rare. Take out and tent in foil for 30 min. Temp will rise to 130 and then drop back down. PERFECT MED RARE.

You get what you pay for. If you know anything about the beef industry this is the lowest of the low in terms of quality. Prob been frozen for a few years and from another country. These grocery stores thaw them out and sell as fresh. Keep lying to yourself if you think this stuff is any good, and good for you. Buy local
Your loss. I got this deal last year when it was a whole ribeye, also USDA Choice, for the same price per lb. Here was my yield: https://i.imgur.com/LvSl62q.jpg

From a 22lb and change rack (the smallest they had), I got one decent sized prime rib roast, two big-ass cowboy steaks (@3lb ea), four boneless ribeyes (@1lb ea), one cap steak, 3 back ribs for smoking, some extra ribeye bits to chop up for stew, and a lot of fat to render down to tallow.

Was it as good as dry-aged Prime? Of course not! Was a fraction of the cost and still delicious? You bet your ass! Definitely stopping by this evening grab another some!

Good luck finding a choice steak at publix that looks as good as that one in the first photo. I havent seen a choice steak at publix with that much marbling in like a decade. The second and third photo where the eye has almost zero marbling is what you'll find 100% of the time.

So what. Red meat is bad for the environment and bad for people. People used to eat way more beans, and with endless light-on-meat or vegetarian recipes on the internet, I hardly see this as a bad thing at all. I'd feel the same way if there was a candy shortage.

As others posted, safeway has it just under $5/lb. They list it as Choice on the packaging, but it is actually select. I know this because I bought an entire roast (limit 1, so I ask them for a full roast from the back) and on the original packaging it says select. The safeway labels are very misleading.
That being said, to get around the "with $25 purchase" restriction, buy any gift card for $25 and that counts.

What are you even talking about? Publix USDS Choice is sourced in the USA, often regionally to the store. I've talked to our friendly meet department guys about this a couple of times (usually when some special like this one is running) and a lot of what I get here in Alabama is from Alabama, Florida and Georgia, from long established, family owned, multi-generational farms...lol... I'm curious - where is it that you got your information from, or did you just make it in your own head up based on some ill formed presumptions?

Publix with a front page Slickdeal is hilarious. That chain would monopolize every page of an Anti-Slickdeals

Good deal but nobody beats ShopRite in the Northeast. $5.99/LB for Choice this Thursday through Christmas Eve.

Dairy cow availability would constitute a crisis. Beef cattle, not so much. We can very much live without beef.
