Beef supply is under serious pressure. Lowest number of cattle in 60+ years. We are sleepwalking into a red meat crisis.
Depends on the quality you want I guess. My Heb and Kroger this week have "select" grade at around $4.47 to $4.77/lb which is the lowest grade. Choice is $13.99 here.
Most Albertson's/Safeway/Von's/Carr's have the roast for $4.99/lb, and Kroger/Fred Meyer for $5.47/lb. Seems like most all stores put 'em on sale before Christmas each year, check out other stores before paying more....

I thought this was close to the normal Costco price for "choice"? Maybe I'm missing something.

Your loss. I got this deal last year when it was a whole ribeye, also USDA Choice, for the same price per lb. Here was my yield: https://i.imgur.com/LvSl62q.jpg

From a 22lb and change rack (the smallest they had), I got one decent sized prime rib roast, two big-ass cowboy steaks (@3lb ea), four boneless ribeyes (@1lb ea), one cap steak, 3 back ribs for smoking, some extra ribeye bits to chop up for stew, and a lot of fat to render down to tallow.

Was it as good as dry-aged Prime? Of course not! Was a fraction of the cost and still delicious? You bet your ass! Definitely stopping by this evening grab another some!
What knife is that?

These are $4.97/lb if you're willing to get a big one (just cut it in 3 and freeze it) at King Soopers (Kroger in Colorado) this week. Or you can pay $8/lb to get it in the smaller size.

I bring this up because this "SlickDeal" is a totally typical grocery sale this time of year. It would be like saying that turkey is at a good price right before Thanksgiving. And this is a pretty mediocre sale price.

Last year or the year before it was 3.50 for the Choice at heb. I guess those days are gone Frown

I buy 5-6 and seal then freeze them. Pull them out and sous vide at 140 (or 137 if you like it more red) for around 10 hours from frozen, then a quick searing on the charcoal. Restaurant quality every time.

FYI, if you have Albertsons or Safeway(or any of their parent companies), it's currently $5.47 a lb for a choice prime rib.

Bought Angus Beef Prime rib bone in roast for 10.97 per lb in Walmart. Good stuff! Is this comparable meat?
