Are these nice enough to justify the price over a Hamilton Jazzmaster or something like that? I wear a G-shock all the time, but most of mine were nesr the $50 mark. I am just curious how much higher the quality is. $350 isn't crazy, but there are lots of nice watches you can get in that range.

This one was $45 last week. It is the classic stainless with the G-Shock warranty:

https://www.amazon.com/Casio-G-Sh...B08195YQLQ

https://www.casio.com/us/watches/...168WGG-1B/

Given a choice of the two, I would personally prefer this over the newer one in the original post, despite it being nearly 10% to 20% of the price.

Looks like it's a pretty nice module disguised as a cheaper one. It has solar and app connectivity if you're in to that.

Nice watch but I would just buy a cheap one and get a stainless band and case off AliExpress if you want something that looks like this.

While it says G shock on amazon page title, it is NOT a g-shock. In reality, I am not sure how much difference the "shock" part matters. To me, solar is more important. For this reason, I lean towards tough solar most of the time.

All being said, to me, metal G-shock is no longer in the category of "tool watch", but edging into "style" or "statement". Thus the price hike. If one tries to justify the price vs functionality, it's likely misguided. A clumsy but applicable example is the walmart plastic bag vs Hermes bag. If you wonder if Hermes could be 1,000,000 times better in carrying groceries or the prescription you've just picked up, you are missing the point.

This is a statement piece, so price is somewhat less relevant. If you look hard enough, you can get a jazzmaster auto for similar price. If functionality is your thing instead of brand recognition, a better value or deal can be had if you look at glycine which has better movement and accuracy out of the box (I have one). Some Chinese microbrands will have 3x better specs and functionality. Or SEIKO will outshine G Shock metal as well under other scenarios (dress skx, or diver, or recent GMTs around $250). Even Citizen (another Japanese brand, on par with Casio in terms of recognition) could easily beat this one, and Jazzmaster, for that matter.
Hope this helps and happy holidays!

I have the GMWB5000D-1 with rubber straps and it's absolutely gorgeous. I love wearing it and how solid it feels. One of my go-tos when on vacation.

The price is justifiable imo. I don't know if the ones that are above $1000 are, but definitely for $300-$500 range. I have the original one which my dad bought me a couple of years ago (I had bought him a Rolex for his 65th birthday and he wanted to buy me something that was unique). I put the rubber straps on it (I find the metal bracelet to be too bling bling) and it's gorgeous. I've had a lot of compliments. Plus, one of the co-founders of the company I work for also wears one (and he's worth maybe $100MM net worth).

It all depends on you. However, if you're simply asking if it's justifiable..? Absolutely.

Your personal preference is meaningless to the value and price of something. You do know that, right?
Value is generally defined as the ratio of function divided by price. My assessment may differ from yours, but the watch I listed has nearly identical function and appearance for about 15% of the price. Therefore, it would generally be considered to be a much better value. However, if you are basing your preference on the model name, trade-mark, or price of a Casio, you simply have terrible taste and are a poor judge of value. You do know that, right?

While the Amazon listing for the watch I linked may or may not be in error, it does come with the G-Shock warranty according to the Casio.com website. I believe this model long predates the current fad of high priced digital watches and hearkens back to a time when all G-Shocks were plastic by definition. I have worn G-Shocks in various forms since the late 1980's. Although I still often wear my 15 year old radio/solar digital GW-5600J, in the last few years I have, like you, migrated over more to the inexpensive analog Tough Solar models.

Casio's as high fashion just seems silly to me. The original Casio digital watch was a nearly perfect application of form following function. They were durable, practical, and cheap. Casio's aren't fine Hermes bags, and they never will be. They will always be much closer to the cheap plastic bags of your analogy, regardless of how much foolish people pay for them. And that is their real beauty. Treating them as high fashion is like over paying $100,000 for a Toyota Yaris and then trying to show it off at an expensive country club. A modern version of the emperor's new clothes.

Thanks OP! Actually, on the same page, quite a few of the other metal 5000's are 40% off too, including the rose gold and black metal models! For example:

The circuit board GMWB5000TCC1, $1080($1800) beautiful but still too rich for me
https://www.casio.com/us/watches/...5000TCC-1/

Edit: Nevermind, only this beauty is available.

Well reasoned! However, I still would argue that even though most folks won't ever take Casio brand seriously, it nevertheless didn't stop the brand from trying.
Maybe I am rusty on historical facts, but I believe Rolex used to be tool watch and standard issue until they no longer. So was Breitling. I believe it was USAF standard issue until not too long ago, now G Shock is the replacement. Many miliary folks wear G Shocks for the cost and toughness and it'll help to instill the image. Adding smart features, however, is a dumb move, as it limits its application in such settings (secure areas not allowing anything smart or linked)
