Friends don't let friends buy off brand lego. We got one as a gift one time and the build was so frustrating. End up giving them away when we receive them as gifts.

Just in case some folks are missing it, these bricks are 'mini' which means they are around 50% to 70% the size of traditional building bricks such as Lego. Does not mean they are bad per se, but you are not getting over 1,100 full size bricks and the finished build will be much smaller. I have a handful of the mini and micro block sets and they can be fun - especially the plant/flower type - but can also be a bit frustrating to assemble due to the smaller size. Having included LED lights at sub-$10 is pretty slick though!

Apparently they fixed the issues in 2019. But brown and dark red are were most susceptible... and those do seem to be what I had issues with. a few green as well.

I've had frustrations with knock-offs in the past, too. However, this year I've got a few Christmas-related and floral sets from Amazon Vine, and I've been impressed. The fit is very, very close to LEGO, and the instructions have been really good as well. I don't think I'd give non-LEGO sets as gifts, but the ones I've got for personal use have been surprisingly good.

Somewhat disagree, but personal preference. Also there's off-brand, and off-off-brand.

Some things bought on ebay are literally the exact same things and just missing the box and lego stamp on every piece - for 50-70% off. Those are worth it if you don't care for those particular boxes (or price is absolutely ridiculous - hello Millennium Falcon).

Then there's the off-off-brand like this one here, where it's a gamble and it often is frustrating.

When I did that it said the code is invalid or something along that line. Maybe it only works for some people now? I'm a Prime member if it makes any difference.
