I am looking to buy a pair of knipex of similar look to this Irwin. I am not handy so it is only for simple household tasks. Which knipes will you recommend? Cobra or plier wrench?

I bought a pair of regular old slip joint pliers from Irwin, and I have the same thing happen all the time. I only use them as a last resort pretty much.

Cobra pliers replace Channel lock, vice grip, and pipe wrenches. The pliers wrench replace the standard adjustable wrench.

I have a small business pulling parts from junkyard cards and reselling. Small, light, and cheap are key for tools as you tend to lose tools at a junkyard. And I agree that these are a bit too small. Standard channel lock pliers are 10". I actually moved up to 8" as these were just to small to meet my needs.

I paid $8.99 about a month ago. $15 for these (the claimed regular price) would be absurd.

I recommend the 10" or 12" Knipex Cobra. They'll last for decades.

Cobra 100%. Pliers wrench has smooth jaws for gripping nuts etc. without marring them. Cobra has a rough and strong grip and can turn pipes, etc.

For smaller pliers I do not find Knipex prices worthwhile. Yes they are nicer tools a but the forces and quality needed with smaller pliers are not as critical as those for larger.

What you want is the cobra/water pump designs as groove joints like these are just not the right tool for most jobs. Cobra design is levels above it and I seldom or never use all the groove joints I had accumulated. I have a plie of them I plan on giving away. They just do not grip well and tear stuff up to much. Again Knipex are top of the line but the questions then are do you want to pay that price, and do you really need all that.

We are lucky as the cobra design is showing up from other manufactures now and you have options if you want pliers with the design. I assume that the patent is up for Knipex and and other makers are in on the design and some are making very capable and usable tools.

I really like this set and they are very reasonable priced. The cobra style are smaller at 5" pair of cobra style and a 6" pair of parallel jaw. Perfect set for bath fixtures in tight places as the parallel jaws are pretty non marring.

These are nice but a little more than they were about a month back when they were $10

You can see many other manufacturers making similar pliers now if you want other sizes and some are getting very decent reviews while I suspect none nowhere near true Knipex quality.

So will a Ferrari but I do not recommend one for grandma that just drives on the weekends and racks up 7,000 at 30 mph. Most people don't need world class top of the line gear be they tools, sporting goods, cars computers etc.

Before we sell, convince or recommend something we must determine use case and ability. If I am looking for skis or a baseball bat of course Olympic class is going to be the best but that is useless information all by its lonesome until I know how they are going to be used. If someone buys Knipex to tighten up the hose on occasion it is an awful waste for both the homeowner and the tool. It is losing equation no matter the value of the tool.

Knipex are great and one of the best. You don't need the best for what you have described. These will be fine unless you need a bigger homeowner grade tool. Knipex is pro grade.
