I would really like for someone who's well versed in air compressors to explain why this 5gl is better than a 6gl pancake like this https://www.homedepot.com/p/Porte.../203162815. Only exception I see this is listed with 3HP while the pancake style doesnt show anything about HP (unless I missed it).

I do not have first hand experience with the Porter Cable but I've had a Makita MAC2400 (smaller brother of this model) for about 9 years. The Makita Big Bore line is an oiled compressor, meaning it has a reservoir and the oil needs to be changed regularly. I use my compressor only occasionally so I change the oil about every two years (and I'm still under the recommended hours). The PC is oil-free, which is perfectly fine but as a general rule they tend not to last as long as an oiled compressor. The MAC2400 is heavy so I can assume this one will be just as heavy or heavier...so the built-in mobility will be a big plus (I built a dedicated hand truck for mine to wheel it around). Capacity is all about what tools you use. Personally I don't see much of a difference between 5 and 6 gallons...neither unit is big enough to run continuous tools like a sander or grinder without constant cycling, which is not recommended for compressor health. But either one would be perfect for nailers, pinners, staplers, topping off tires, short bursts of high pressure air to move dust.

TL/DR: between these two, get the Makita.

I had a pancake oil-less for a long time, until I did some research on compressors and found out about oil-lubed compressors. They are more rare, and yes you do need to change the oil (which tbh is kinda fun). I got the MAC2400 as well. Its about half of the loudness of an oil-less, and about twice as powerful. Very good build quality. I highly recommend an oil-lubed over an oil-less.

Just compare the published specs for both compressors and you'll see obvious differences in their specs that communicate why the Makita is more appropriate than the Porter Cable pancake for demanding applications (i.e. CFM, PSI, unit weight, motor type). If you aren't able to pick out those differences, then you're applications don't yet require the specs of the Makita.

Thank you all for the explanation. I have a 6gl pancake which I mostly used for small stuff like car tires and short burst of cleaning. Once a year, I used it to clear out the 5 zones sprinkler system. That takes foreveeeer. Was wondering if a more powerful one but less capacity would make a big difference in time. Seems prob not, need a bigger tank. Once a year, I can deal w/it I guess. Thanks again

In fairness the Makita would still be way better for that one time a year job (much higher airflow rating). A larger tank compressor may not actually help much unless it's already full and has a good compressor head with a high airflow. Lower end big tank compressors are only better than small compressors for as long as their tank pressure/volume hold up. That said, this compressor is somewhat a niche product, best suited for portability and tools that take short duration but high demand air flow like a crew running air nailers. For most consumers the cheap pancake or cheap big tank compressor are a better value.

In case this helps someone in Phoenix metro, the HD on Bell Rd. in Glendale does have the floor model for 230 when I was there this morning.
Was thinking about it but decided it wouldn't fit my use case.

CFM is the biggest difference. You can't run, an impact gun or DA from the pancake, where this one @6.5 CFM can
