This is QLC without a DRAM cache. You can get a Kingspec 2TB for about this price that is TLC without DRAM cache, and in my opinion that would be the better buy.

Agree the Kingspec is a better deal now, but looking around online, looks like the MP44L is TLC unless they changed their flash recently. But still don't see any indication it is QLC.

Personally, I'm more familiar with the Teamgroup brand, so would recommend that over Kingspec, which I've never heard of before.

Sneaky hardware changes.
Exposes their intention right from the start.

What do you mean. From all the information I've been able to find these use TLC and SLC caching which is good considering this price point. I don't think this is QLC.

Team Group has historically named their QLC SSD with the letter "Q": MP34Q (vs MP34 with TLC) and "QX" (vs CX2, AX2, EX2). I don't recall them switching any model from TLC to QLC. Manufacturers switch to cheaper and more layer TLC (say, from 64 > 96 > 112 > 176 layers) and controllers all the time due to intense price competition, as illustrated by the TechPowerUp article linked above. Ideally they should update the model number (say, 960 > 970 > 980 > 990 EVO) but non-first-tier brands prefer continuity and familiarity, and they have to switch suppliers quickly since they can't command a premium like first-tier brands (WD Black, Samsung).

Per this 2022 article [com.au], WD Blue SN550, Crucial P2, various PNY, Kingston NV1 had switched from TLC to QLC. Kingston has 15 known variants [techpowerup.com] of the popular NV2 model with varying TLC/QLC and controllers. The very popular (and recently discontinued after a 6 year run) Crucial MX500 2.5" SATA SSD with DRAM used to have 1GB RAM per 1TB of flash, but got reduced to 0.5GB RAM across the board around 2022 (plus moved from 64/96 to 172 layer TLC).

TechPowerUp: Please note that this SSD is sold in multiple variants with different NAND flash or controller, which could affect performance

So is the TechPowerUp article suggesting that even though this is a MP44L, emphasis on L, Team Group could be shipping these with QLC? When mine arrives is there an easy way for me to varify if my MP44L has TLC or QLC?

Run the appropriate Flash ID [vlo.name] tool on it. It should be either the Phison NVMe Flash ID2 or the Maxio NVMe Flash ID.

A recently purchased Team Group MP44L came with the Maxio MAP1602 controller and 176-layer Micron (B47R) TLC NAND. It is DRAM-less, with 32MB HMB.

No, the MP44L is TLC.

Even as someone who isn't a huge Team Group fan, I'd take their drives over a Kingspec any day. Just look at the recent reviews of the two drives. Also, Kingspec can't even be bothered to put the right logos on their labels. The XG7000 has the Serial ATA logo, not the NVMe one. I don't see the Kingspec as being the better deal, unless you really want that tiny bit of potentially extra performance, assuming they haven't swapped to QLC. The MP44L is still TLC.

That warning means that it's been seen with different hardware configurations. None of the MP44L configurations I've heard of use QLC. You can use the Flash ID tool that someone else linked to verify the type of NAND. If the back of the drive says "MAP1602" you should use the Maxio NVMe Flash ID tool. Otherwise, try the Phison NVMe Flash ID2 tool first.
