The title of the product doesn't say "state" (as it does for Deluxe) or anywhere in the description but the photo says "Federal + State", so I am confused.
Never happened before, they just used to ask if I wanted to use the default card.
What is going on?

Direct File is a free IRS program for filing a federal tax return online. For tax year 2024, Direct File is open to eligible taxpayers in Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
To qualify, you must be a W-2 employee, receive Social Security or unemployment insurance or have an investment income of less than $1,500. You must also have a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number and a valid state ID or passport.
You can't file with DirectFile if your 2024 wages were more than $200,000 ($160,200 if you had more than one employer) or you're married filing separately and your wages were more than $125,000
Direct File can be used to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, but not many other credits. You also can't itemize deductions or report additional income, like capital gains or money from gig work or rental properties.
1: can install on multiple pcs/devices, so can share with family members in different households (or friends)
2: your data and info isn't "stored in the cloud". its only a matter of time for it to be stolen/hijacked/ransomed/sold
3. you get the actual filing (PDFs) files - so you can store them for future or import to other programs - however, I believe you can also download your finished forms/filing from online version, just more steps/more difficult
4. CD makes good coaster or mirror after install :-) - but now they retired the media and its a direct download only.
....
Did your total for the software and gift card still come out to what it was supposed to be? Looking at the page for the version I want (home & biz), it's $75.99, but if I scroll down I can see that's broken down as $65.99 for the software and $10 for the gift card. So I would be getting a free gift card because I'm still paying the sale price of $75.99, they are just breaking it down that way for whatever reason.
Is there some reason/benefits as to why people pay almost twice as much to file with TurboTax instead of H&R?
I guess it's a matter of preference, you would really need to hear from people who've tried both. Even then, their experience of which is better may not apply to someone else who had different filing needs (like having freelance money or overseas income to report, perhaps one software is better in certain circumstances than the other). I would never change now, as I like how TT works and I love being able to import last year's taxes into this year's software. BUT if you like what you have with h&r block now, you might as well stick with it.
u active trader? u have rental?
just get the premiere version.
what u saving 20-30 for delux.
totally not worth the headache
nor is the free tax usa or hr block
go w tt. and be done
there's reasons to use the higher versions than deluxe
saving $20 to $30 to overpay your taxes is penny wise and pound foolish. but many SDrs are locked into that rather poor mindset.
if you have complicated taxes, buy up..
