I was at my local Costco today and noticed that the older 8 gig version is now on clearance for $649.97. Pretty good deal since it matches the M1 MacBook Air (older design) pricing at Walmart.

YMMV as it was low stock at my Costco (University City, MO). I didn't pull the trigger because of the 8 gig ram but it may be a great deal for someone looking for their first Mac

8GB M1 Air struggling with just heavy browsing. I don't expect M2 with the base 256 chip to be any good at all

Mine struggling too, a laptop needs to have at least 16GB. I only want an Air and my next one will be at least 24GB. I wish they made a 32 GB version. I don't like the Pros only getting higher RAM and them being super heavy.

16GB isn't enough RAM.

8GB in 2025 should be a crime for non upgradable devices

there are still people in the world that use the original MacBook air with no issues. That machine came out way before the m1 chip so a majority of people will be fine with the m1 or anything greater.

How much pr0n are you guys viewing at one time for it to struggle? My m1 mba works more than fine that I can still play starcraft 2 without problems

Congrats, you can play a game that came out 15 years ago. 🙄

8GB is only passable for very light users, but for anyone that multitasks with multiple applications or has lots of browser tabs you will run into issues.

If you just need a basic browsing device with good battery life, this will be fine, it is a good processor just held back by the memory. But it still isn't a great deal for the price. You can get better value with a Windows laptop (big sales on snapdragon lately) or even a good tablet + keyboard folio case.

If you want Mac for the OS, applications, or the apple ecosystem, fair enough. But then for just ~$100-200 more you could get a M2/M3 macbook air (16/256) and not have the RAM issues, those models are regularly on sale now. There is also M1 Macbook Pro (16/512) at $850 (best buy refurbished) which gets you a better screen and ports, and also the new M4 Mac Mini (16/256) at $500 (costco or apple edu) if you don't need a laptop specifically and already have peripherals. All of these represent better value imo.

The only reason to get this is if you really want a macbook specifically and this is the absolute top of your budget.

1 year of M2 8Gb and now 1 year of M3 16 512, and can't say I've noticed anything.
