I bought two of the specials from Adorama and they both had horrible fret sprout - completely unplayable. I sent pictures of it to them and they sent me a $15 refund per guitar because I can fix it myself. Just a warning to others who are interested in buying one.

That's not an Adorama issue, it's a baked maple issue. Many times the fret sprout occurs because the baking process is too close to the fretting of a neck.

Same. I returned the first one. Second one is just as bad. The authorized warranty shop is an hour away. I don't mind taking it if they'll pay me the $15. Covers gas.

But this neck has a 1/2" spot at the 23rd non-fret that is missing lacquer. Almost like there was tape or something got some extra sanding that shouldn't. I'm torn about sending it back but inclined to call it "character" and just get the sprout fixed.

I just found 2 other issues. Black paint drop inside the lower bout where it should be just red - looks like a drop of paint from where they were painting the top. the FR nut doesn't sit absolutely flush with the edge of the fretboard. on the low E side it hangs off by a smidgen. and short on the other side by the same. might be due to the neck shrinkage.

I'm pretty sure they roast the raw wood for the necks before fretting it. Most of the moisture should be removed before the frets are added - that is supposed to be one of the benefits of a roasted neck.

The Charvel roasted necks get complaints about fret sprout from owners also. It's something weird because stability is supposed to be a feature of roasted.
