Are they playing a hard ball, trying to get SDers into submission at the inflated deal?

Nope, holding out for better deals
This isn't expired. Is this as good a price as we'll get if we are trying to file early this year? Need to make sure I get that federal EV Credit before Trump potentially does away with it.

I just filed but i ended paying $20 extra for state? Thought it was free. :/
With Deluxe + State you get one free state program. That does not include the state e-file fee. That is separate and extra. If you paid the e-file fee ($19.95) for your state, that is normal and expected. The e-file fee has been charged for many, many, years with both H&R Block and with Turbo Tax. There are only one or two states (NY if I remember right being one of them apparently) that don't charge an state e-file fee.

The workaround is to see if your state has it's own free state tax filing website. If it does then print out the state return and manually enter in the information into the state's tax filing website.

I wonder if any states will just let you upload a PDF.

You know, it would be wise for every state to implement such an option. Then people could use any tax software they want, but avoid mailing paper that could get lost or damaged. The state gets the advantage of not having to transcribe or scan all of this information in. It would be way easier to extract the data accurately from a digital copy. Sounds like a win win for everyone and should be relatively cheap to implement.

I didn't verify this, but AI tells me this is possible in California, Florida, New York, Texas, and Washington.
*edit* well Florida, Texas, and Washington have no state income tax so.....

You are right but many states are typically about on par or worse than the backward bureaucracy and inefficiency at the federal level. I imagine many states may even be worse.

Mine does not even let you file till 2/18. One of the first questions Q&As in online help was about what to do if the website loses the return and information you are working on. I will pass as I also worry about security, I live in one of the most corrupt and incompetent states in the nation sadly.

Maryland comptroller blames printing malfunction for sensitive data sent to wrong addresses
https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore...sensitive/

We know some states can not even supply water to firefighters or protecting citizens from violent felons and gangs that with almost daily regularity kill law abiding taxpayers. How much focus or care do we think or imagine they could have in helping or caring for the taxpayer.

Bureaucracies care about the bureaucracies interests. Hopefully that may change as we are seeing some real light shown on them for maybe the first time ever but till then we will continue to see stuff like this.

More Rich Taxpayers Learn Their Data Was Stolen in Huge IRS Leak
https://taxprof.typepad.com/taxpr...-leak.html

That, that guy only got five years is very concerning. What would they do to company like Bock or TT if they did that? The leniency sends a message in itself and that no one in the agency that let it happen paid any price also does.

Maryland's big thing last year was in banning plastic straws and bags. The taxpayer dutifully lined up behind government after some propaganda ads were run pointing out these companies were evil and uncaring and supposedly harmed consumers. it passed and everybody felt very good about themselves for creating pages and pages of new regulation and law that now costs our citizens but I think the biggest thrill for the gullible voters was that they got the impressions they were sticking it to the greedy, bad and uncaring corporations. The local press, media and politicians definitely all had that as the spin.

The problem is is that it did not do anything like that at all but just has government and corporations in collusion to get as much as possible from the taxpayer and consumer. People here now complain about the fee they voted for and blame the companies like it was their fault. The new system increased cost for every business and every consumer.

The new laws and system allow stores to bill you for a bag when you may not even take one as it gets automatically added to the receipt if you do not specifically decline. I imagine the state has filed the coffers of the corporations with many people's money that never did take or use a bag. That helps the state as another percentage of the fee goes to them. They literally set up a system to prey on consumers that may not have the capacity to be careful which would be many of our elderly that get easily confused and overlook stuff.

If people get to together and get focused on where the real and large corruption, inefficiency and waste lies maybe we can have some change. So many I see are focused on some small pet peeves or aggravations and ignore the very large catastrophic issues that are right in front of our faces.
