If someone asked me how to make a free mobile data plan, my very first thought would be "control its DNS, packet-inspect everything on my network so I can tell who's doing what, sell that info to data brokers, advertisers, marketing agencies, etc., and insert enough legalese to my long-AF-that-nobody-reads-it terms of service that it's totally OK for me to do that." Classic case of "if it's free, it's because you are the product."

If you think I'm joking, check your own current paid ISP plan's terms of service. Non-trivial probability they're already doing similar to you, at least if you're not protected by something like the EU's GDPR.

Is that what's going on here, or is their business model different somehow?
Right now their 20$ a month plan turns out to cost a couple of dollars a month if you opt in to their location tracking. They are trying to build a network of hotpots to fill in what traditional cell towers miss. Turn on tracking and they map whenever they hit one of their hotspots. Then they try to get new ones in empty areas.

Anyways...So they will pay you in their crypto token., Which they then accept as payment.Or you can sell yourself. Im assuming they are going to expand on this somehow.

Also a while back they were talking about another app that carriers were going to opt into that allows people to use each others phones a a hotspot for a small fee.
Just a guess but maybe something with this as well.

They are not the only company going this way there are going to be some announcements very soon of others going this path
I gave them my email address for spam, so we'll see. Right now it looks like they just offer one plan -- $20/mo for unlimited.

Practically unusable plan, went over talk / data limit in a first few days and they want $7.50 per extra GB. That's about $150 per month with my normal usage. Free sounds good but what's the point to have free but unusable plan? They want to mine some data off your phone 24/7 and give you almost nothing in return.
Uhh, This was well advertised (in headlines, in the description, in all discussions, and on the website) as a free plan for 3GB/month. If you need more than 20GB/month ($150/$7.5 per GB), then obviously this plan is not for you. I'm pretty sure it's not a fault of the plan that they are giving out 3GB free and you happen to need 20+GB.

You can check what everyone else charges for a 3GB/month plan (probably anywhere from $10-$30/month), and that is the value you are receiving.

No need to be SA here, I've full blown ATT unlimited plan paid by my company, grandfathered Helium unlimited $5 and Visible + but this is not a point. From my brief experience with zero plan they basically giving nothing for nothing or should i say zero for zero...? while mining data off your phone (this is plan requirement btw and not optional so nothing is free here) daily and draining battery 24/7

p.s I used to have 500 talk minutes twenty years ago...lol

To delete your Helium Mobile Persona ID verification data, you need to delete your Helium Mobile account; this will automatically redact your identity verification information stored on Persona, including your biometric data like selfies and government ID scans which are deleted after 3 years as well.

your ID info stays on the server essentially indefinitely

until you cancel your service.

Sorry, but I don't think I am following your "logic." Helium is giving 3GB data, 100 min talk, 300 text for "nothing" so I don't quite see that as "zero for zero." It seems you need much more than 20GB/month data, so this plan is not for you.

It's like if someone offered you a car for free as long as you only drove it less than 3000 miles per year, and then if you went over, had to pay $750 per extra 1000 miles, and also checked the GPS of the car. But, you then say you need to drive it 20,000 miles per year and think you are getting nothing for nothing because you can get a free car from your company and drive it with unlimited miles.

Just a data point...
I signed up for the eSIM option on my backup phone, an unlocked Moto G Power 2024 from StraightTalk.
On battery saving mode, phone/Helium app only uses ~10% a day. Hence, the battery will last at a little more than a week.
Not bad for a free plan.

Reread my post above, nothing is free here, you have to do some extra steps to earn and maintain your "free" plan -> else they have a rights to terminate your service and probably they will in the near future if you don't follow their requirements. The plan itself is a joke but i can see some usecases once in a blue moon when you need 2FA verification from 'non-voip' number for some random BS stuff like store / club /gas station memberships etc.. cause i never share my primary number with anyone except my banks and doctor .

I think the best plan is from tmobile for $15 a month after $5 auto pay discount on each line. I got 6 lines from them and only pay for 3 plus the taxes on each line. The other 3 is free. These plans qualify for the costco upgrade promotion trading in a iphone 12 gets you $500 trade in credit prorated after 24 months plus waived upgrade fee and $100 costco gift card on iphone 16 pro max. No other low price plans even lets you upgrade with a discount for trade in's like that. I don't mind being stuck with t mobile for another 24 months at that price I am paying for the unlimited plan on everything but they can lower the speed after 50gb but i rarely have been lowered ever and I go over 200gb monthly.

I use a "free" Google Voice number for almost all phone ID requirements, but it doesn;t work on some two-factor authentication sites. The Helium number did work for Venmo, when Google Voice did not (EDIT: Venmo says GV cannot be used for initial account verification but can be used for verification after an account has been created).

GV also has requirements (must use once every few months) as does Helium (must share location--I think all other cell services are trackable through triangulation from cell towers). Not sure what else they require or if they will in the future have other requirements.

I wouldn't say that conditions prevent something from being considered "free," e.g., a "free" BOGO pizza may require you to buy one first. That doesn't disqualify it in most people's eyes from being called getting a "free" pizza (though you'd qualify that by saying it's BOGO). I think almost everything on SD that is "free" will have some conditions (like signing up for an account, fulfilling some paperwork, sending in forms, etc.)

I am using it as an e-SIM so I can switch between it and another cheap, low talk/data Sim (Tello) on my phone until I am confident Helium is reliable. Since I am almost always around wi-fi (home or car hotspot) and rarely make voice calls, the 3GB/100min/300txt plan is more than enough for rare occasions I am out and away from wi-fi. I can always switch back to another service if not.

Yes, Venmo and many other MF..s getting smarter day by day and now require non-voip number. Another issue with helium number you can't use it as you wish due to privacy reasons. Persona will keep your all your data as long as you remain helium customer and 3 years more after service cancellation ( that's what say say but I'm sure they will keep it forever)
