Just make sure you don't confuse this router with the GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) one which is somewhat more powerful for VPN throughput, has a 2.5GbE WAN port, and Wifi 6 (AX) vs. Wifi 5 (AC).
This is a good travel router in it's own right for sub $50, but it might be limited compared to the other one depending on your use case.
yes, takes hotel wifi and any devices connected to router then share that signal. Can also take from cell phone (hot spot), or ethernet cable. great for groups/family traveling while waiting at airport, or cafe or in hotel. works off battery pack if no power nearby.
I initially thought this was the Beryl AX and was prepared to jump all over it. The AC version is still pretty good, and at least seems to support OpenWRT so will hopefully be supported even if/when Gl.iNet stops releasing firmware for it.

The feature set on this is pretty similar to the$35 Opal model [amazon.com], but it doesn't look like the Opal is OpenWRT compatible for whatever reason. There's supposedly still firmware support on the Opal until May 2026, so that may be an option to anyone that doesn't need/care about cutting-edge firmware support; or just want something to use in the meantime before jumping to a Wifi6/AX model. Other than the MicroSD card slot and USB 3.0 port, I don't see a whole lot of hardware differences between the Opal and (non-AX) Beryl.

Does it boost the Wi-Fi signal?

Quote from IndigoTexture1812 :
For the travel side, I don't think it matters much anyway as someone who uses these products. What I found is most free internet is throttled anyway, so you rarely get the full throughput on the user side due to that. Your home VPN router is limited by the upload speed as well. So unless you have fiber, you're like the rest of us measly cable customers with 10mb upload. So in my case that difference in speed on the user side didn't matter. But as I mentioned, definitely would if you had higher end internet on your VPN server side
Yep. I'm a pretty big 'tech geek' but all in all, 100mbps down is really more than enough to get meaningful work done, which these are more than capable of.

That said, VPN throughout isn't the greatest (up to ~90mbps via wireguard, and only about 20mbps via OpenVPN), which is where the Beryl AX shines (300 / 150 mbps by comparison).

I got my MT1300 yesterday, fired it up to see that it uses about 2-3W 'idle', but I plan on flashing it with OpenWRT so I haven't gotten it fully set up just yet. I'm probably going to keep an eye out for a deal on the Beryl AX - these are pretty nice little units.

I mentioned it before, but I really wish these existed back in the days I was doing tech setup @ conventions! Multi-WAN failover & load balancing is pretty awesome for stuff like that.
