I've had a ton of Sonos speakers the last five years. In general I love the brand. The Roam, in my opinion, is very meh. Is it worth this price? Honestly I don't know. Go listen to one and assume it will fail in 1-3 years

Agree. Love Sonos (well, less after the update...) but disappointed in the Roam - I end up seldom using it because whenever I try it wants to do 5 minutes of updates and even after that I have issues getting it to sync with other speakers. Just not worth the hassle.

I've sold all of my Sonos speakers except the Roam, because it's a good-enough portable Airplay 2 speaker and there aren't a lot of other portable options for that. No idea how it is it use if you use Sonos's app to play things, but I didn't use the app outside of setting things up before their fiasco and continue to not use it now.

Rtings gave it a full point higher on their Music scale than the Google Nest Mini that I have now, so I think it should be sufficient for my needs. Not thrilled to hear about the expected service life though. I may just get the bigger Nest speaker, just mad that I didn't jump on the 50% off sale they were having over the holidays. Thanks for the details.
