First apple desktop in my house since, well, the IIe lol. . .pre Mac.
If the cost between 8 and 16 was negligible for apple this could be a reason. It would alleviate any negative assumptions of 8gb not being enough.
Another reason:
Apple has increased the min and max ram counts on machines. Once an assembly line is tooled to produce min and max componentry they won't backtrack to offer less specs.
But the more pressing question. Have you used a M series machine with 8gb and had it crash, stutter, or not perform a function in a timely manner?
Compare battery life performing the same tasks on software with a MacBook and equivalent higher end spec notebook and you will the Mac performs much better with efficiency. If you get 2 hrs on a nicely spec notebook I bet you get 10 on a MacBook.
A Mac just performs more efficiently and effectively per watt consumed. Why? The hardware and software on mac are built are purpose built to work with one another.
Windows has to deal with 1000's of configs. It's hard to build for efficiency.
This is just why a lower hardware spec iPhone performs better in tests vs higher specd android . Sane scenario
Not promoting any platform. Happily running Windows 11 on 8GB on an 8th gen laptop. However, of course, my high end gaming PC gets far more RAM, because of the intended use. Or 4GB on a Chromebook, no problems there. Yes, 8GB would be nicer, but that's not a showstopper for its intended purpose.
