Here's the link for the one I ended up getting instead for $604 fair blue/M3/8GB/256GB/10CGPU as no luck on this one. Was a display I'm guessing but in great shape no scratches, keyboard/mouse looked new. YMMV on fair condition though. . .

Yes, people do that.

There's a fair condition one 15 miles from me for $539. But I'm too scared to take a chance on it being serious effed up.
Paying for new, not fair, amortize that cost over 3-5 years. Pennies per day for peace of mind and a warranty. The old saying of "penny-wise and pound-foolish." Nothing wrong with used, but the price discrepancy isn't worth it.

That's not what it means.

If the cost between 8 and 16 was negligible for apple this could be a reason. It would alleviate any negative assumptions of 8gb not being enough.

Another reason:
Apple has increased the min and max ram counts on machines. Once an assembly line is tooled to produce min and max componentry they won't backtrack to offer less specs.

But the more pressing question. Have you used a M series machine with 8gb and had it crash, stutter, or not perform a function in a timely manner?

Compare battery life performing the same tasks on software with a MacBook and equivalent higher end spec notebook and you will the Mac performs much better with efficiency. If you get 2 hrs on a nicely spec notebook I bet you get 10 on a MacBook.

A Mac just performs more efficiently and effectively per watt consumed. Why? The hardware and software on mac are built are purpose built to work with one another.

Windows has to deal with 1000's of configs. It's hard to build for efficiency.

This is just why a lower hardware spec iPhone performs better in tests vs higher specd android . Sane scenario
This is simply an exaggeration and only speak from experience being platform agnostic. Why does my cheap Moto phone feel snappier than my 13 Pro Max? And there's a thing called Common Reference Platform for hardware. Windows is not perfect, but people shouldn't make the Mac seem like its the most optimal platform of perfection or near-perfection.
Not promoting any platform. Happily running Windows 11 on 8GB on an 8th gen laptop. However, of course, my high end gaming PC gets far more RAM, because of the intended use. Or 4GB on a Chromebook, no problems there. Yes, 8GB would be nicer, but that's not a showstopper for its intended purpose.

People act like these aren't capable of anything but web browsing. I was editing for a TV station with a base model m1 with zero issues.

Unless you're super attached to the iMac form factor, the new M4 Mac Mini (16GB RAM/256GB SSD) at $499 + Separate Monitor is a better value proposition, IMO. People have also already figured out internal SSD upgrades for the M4 Mac Mini.

BEWARE, they are apparently selling bashed up crap from 3rd party companies now. I drove 45 min to grab one of these and it was without accessories, just ghetto in a brown box. I asked them to just cancel and refund the order and they gave me one that wasn't listed that was an actual return, in pretty great condition but missing the charging cable for the peripherals, so for $600, I'll take it

The whole point of these iMacs is the incredible quality screen. At this point, in my opionion, OS X is designed to look purposefully sketchy on non-HiDPI screens, because Apple hates poor people. YMMV.

Picked up one, and returned it the next day. No outstanding warranty, or the ability to buy Apple Care. It's the luck of the draw so could be a costly mistake.

Important to note that this comes with the basic keyboard, not the fingerprint one - add $125'ish for that if you want any kind of verification other than typing your login password in 50 times a day

Tried two different locations that showed one in stock, both were cancelled within a few hours, definitely dead
