I got one of these last April. I have taken it on a few trips and it has been a major improvement on our travel and using hotel internet. We have Unifi home network equipment and I set up my home gateway to act as a VPN endpoint and have this point to our network when on the hotel internet. Then all of our DNS queries and everything pass through our home Pi-Hole.

It's helpful for privacy, but we aren't doing anything major when traveling typically. What's really nice is the on-the-go ad blocking through Pi-Hole no matter where we are or what device is connected. And it's using the ad blocking lists I have curated over the years for our Pi-Hole, so it beats just trying to use a separate service/addon on each device we take with us.

They have definitely come a long way on the firmware stability and passing along captive portals.

I bought this last August and it has been great. I've traveled a lot for business and it has been so convenient for creating a local network at hotels for all of my devices (laptop, tablet, phones). Instead of connecting each device to the public wifi, I only need to connect the router to the public wifi network and all of my devices connect to the router. The router can run a VPN for me (I've used Nord and Mullvad on this router no problems) and also runs Adblock (the default router OS comes with Adblock set up already). This is huge because when the VPN is running on the router, all of your devices are on the VPN automatically, same with Adblock. I've also used this on a Royal Caribbean Cruise and it worked great. Sometimes you need your own network as well when on public wifi, a specific use case for me is when exporting an iOS build from Xcode on a MacBook to an iPhone or iPad for testing, all devices need to be on the same network. It's a small form factor so I just put it in my backpack on all my travels and use it in hotels, airports, and anywhere else while I'm out. I am also able to tether it to my iPhone and use my iPhone's hotspot as the internet source for this router. You can google how to update the settings on the router so the iPhone's hotspot is not throttled.

For the cruise, I'm assuming you need there's no Ethernet available on the room and you would need to buy the WiFi package from the ship?

this is such a great device i highly recommend it. got it in 2023 and it's made up for itself domestically and internationally. if im staying at a hotel or airbnb this thing is coming with me

I have two of these.

I work from home. Need internet. Only have 1 option of internet to the house.

I have one of these hooked up with a phone tethered to it that feeds my home firewall for my secondary internet connection. I got 1 year of free spectrum mobile service, so just using it for that. I have it tethered via a usb cable and have the battery settings on the phone to not charge past 80%.

The other one I have I take with me on trips where I'll be staying at a hotel.

can you point to the procedure to setup your TP-link? Was thinking to repurpose an older wifi router to do essentially similar functions, if possible.

In general, don't wait for new versions of routers because they will be buggy upon first release. Buy and use the discounted stable version.
