You might be in the minority.
I think most people interested in a 4k UHD Blu Ray player find the included streaming apps useless!

My 4K TV can stream, my Android box can stream, my game consoles and PCs can stream and all those things are already connected to the TV so why in the world would I need yet another thing that streams....... I got my Bluray player to play Bluray discs.

Better quality, better upscaling(BR/DVD), supports DV on disc, supports SACD/DVD-A.

Just an FYI.
The 700 supports SACD.
The 800 model is the one that does both SACD and DVD-A.

I'm also debating this vs continuing to use my Xbox One S that's in the living room for 4K Blu-rays. How is it better quality? Isn't that just decided by the codec and bitrate on the disc - HEVC and 100ish Mbps?

I've had this player for a while and the only issue I've had is with certain UHD Blu-Ray discs freezing during playback. Seems to happen with longer titles and closer to the 2 hour mark. There's apparently a solution to it, but I am yet to try it out: https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray...ezing_fix/

I have this. Note it supports Dolby Vision but not HDR10+. All players only support one or the other until you get to $400+
You need to look up each disk and see if it supports Dolby Vision. If so, before you insert the disk, enable in settings, if not, disable in settings. If the setting is wrong, it'll look a bit messed up.

Because everyone in the world is not you and does not have all those things hooked to their tv. I don't need it either, but if someone does I don't mind.

I wanted so much for the Sony UBP-X700M HDR 4K UHD Network Blu-ray Disc Player to work as I am a real fan of Sony and wanted to put my Sony 4K OLED screen to good use. Unfortunately I went through 2 X700 players before the warrantee ran out, Sony was quick to replace them. Each time they were bricked after a SW update. After the third instance it went to recycle, and got replaced with the Sony UBP-X800 and it has worked flawlessly,

Why is this so expensive?

Is it possible to find a Blu-Ray player that just plays discs and doesn't have apps or internet connectivity? Would that be cheaper? How much would it cost?

In short the main difference in quality is how the content is processed, there is no standard.

Imo if you play/have interest in games & don't want to add another device, game console makes complete sense.

They have some pre-loaded apps, but they are pretty limited. I don't know why Sony does not have their ecosystem with appstore even though they have one with PlayStation media.
Actually Sony TV's that have the google operating system are pretty well loaded

if you are on a limited budget
The difference in this player and a $400 plus player will buy you a step up in TV in many cases
That is much better use of funds than a better 4K player, IMO

This coming from a person that owns a Panasonic UB900, UB420, UB820 as well as a refurbed LG UBK90 I bought for $99( shipped)
That refurbed LG player is the best looking 4K movie experience I have connected to my Sony A95L OLED

A better panel is going to " trump" a better player in daily ownership and use, to my eyes

if you are buying all top of the line options...then sure, pay extra for what I would say is a nuance, at best

Finally! I've been eyeing the Sony UBP-X700M for ages, and now it's on sale! My old Blu-ray player is ancient, and I've been wanting to upgrade to 4K for a while. The HDR support is a huge plus, and the Hi-Res Audio capability is going to be amazing for my music collection. I'm really excited to see how my 4K movies look on my TV with this player. Plus, the network features mean I can finally stream directly from the player. This is a definite upgrade, and I can't wait to set it up!
