28TB Seagate Exos drive for $389 Refurbished.

Not a huge Seagate fan but if you are this seems good. I recently had to do a warranty claim with server part deals and it was super easy

I have always been afraid of ordering hard drives online. Both my UPS and FedEx drivers like to throw smaller packages from my driveway to my front porch.(a distance of about 25 feet?)

Last time I ordered a WD red hard drive, it landed on the porch so hard that I heard it from the backyard. Needless to say, I returned that hard drive before even testing it.

Server part deals direct has this for $364. It makes me nervous there's so many 28tb available refurbished. I wonder if there's a systemic problem with them.

Serverpartsdeals and goharddrive are really good about packaging their drives, I got 2 refurbed 16tb exos x24 drives from SPD last year and they've been working great in my DS1819+.

You could probably also opt to get it delivered to a local FedEx or UPS office and pick it up there I imagine

Still hoping for a $/TB deal like the $73/12TB refurbs from last year. I need at least 2 more for a build and these latest "deals" are 3x more expensive.

That's a good reason to never buy refurbished drives. I dont want your drive that slammed on the porch.

It's not the packaging I dislike. It's the contents I don't like . Buying refurb drives is one way to save money I will NEVER do. It's not worth it!

28TB....28,000GB....

it was only around 1994 when the employee at CompUSA looked impressed when I was paying $2000(1994 Dollars) for a new Compaq computer with a "massive" 2GB 5-1/4-inch hard drive. Smilie

holy cow, 28TB hard drive is about 14,000 times bigger than that old 2GB hard drive!

buying open box external hard drives at Best Buy store can be fun sometimes. I got a 10TB WD external drive. It was open-box and in excellent condition.

When I got home, I plugged it in. Just before I was about to format it for my Mac, I noticed dozens of folders on the drive. Let's just say I discovered what college boys did with such large hard drives. (and probably too stupid to wipe the drive before returning it to Best Buy?)

I ended up not formatting the drive and just enjoyed the contents. Big Grin

they really should just label packages throw and no throw. it saves tremendous time and strain if they could just toss packages, 99% of which are fine. but literall ythis and glass are the only two things you cant throw lol.

they have their uses for example a nas system for cold storing massive data that you backup with other drives. but if you are trying to use them for any kind of heavy lifting IE they are on and running all the time yeah these will fail with time. datacenters understand their units lifespan when units start failing and its just too much maintenance/ data loss risk for them to swap them out.

but its a great way to store massive amounts of data relatively cheaply

not sure who really needs this or practically uses them, piraters who hoard anime/games/movies/shows maybe?

wow. a computer with a 2GB HD in 1994 for $2000? That was really cheap. We paid more than that in the same year for a 386 with 128MB of hd space, a 2.5-inch floppy and a 3.5-inch floppy. 1X CD-rom was another $600 extra, and it was so slow, that it couldn't play video files from the MS Encarta CD without stuttering. You'd have to copy the video file to the HD, then play it from there for it to be smooth.

Spending over $10/TB for a used enterprise drive is way too much. Buying new would be better... The prices are generally less than $20/TB for the larger drives.
