I never minded this issue if they were part of a larger 5.1 or 7.1 system as there are 3,4 and 5 way speakers to pick up the middle. Not so good with a 2.0 or 2.1 though. And if you are looking at near field listening, you really want a 3 way with a reasonable sub.
Hate to be such a fan of the Sony SSCS5's, but they really are superior for near field applications. There's also a hack to get them for well under the $199 LIST.
1) Buy them direct from the Sony store
2) Sign up for their mailing list for $25 off
3) Link and pay thru PayPal for 5% cashback
$199 minus $25 minus $10 rebate = $165 net.
It's weird⦠the imaging of the center (vocals) on the Klipsch's seems pretty good. My ub5s have this weird thing where my head has to be in like the EXACT RIGHT PLACE to have the center resolve. But once I do the instruments all around the sound field sound like they are coming from one place, I guess audiophile folks call it something like pinpointing?
The Klipsch's actually do not sound bad at all⦠they sound better than my old Elac b5's, but they seem to be failing vs my ub5s in the imaging department. The sound signature itself I don't mind and I really like the soundstage width and depth.
I know, the ub5s are hard to drive so i might be lacking there. I am powering them off my aventage a740 in pure direct mode. I do have some v3 monos on order and those might make the ub5s come alive with their soundstage.
I am just contemplating whether or not to return the Klipsch speakers.
I will give them some break in and see if things improve.
Edit: when I say the instruments are from one place I mean from where they should be, and it sounds like a single instrument. On the rps, the instrument seems to come from an area rather than a single point even though the left and right edges of the soundstage are wider. In addition, the soundstage seems fuller on the rps vs the ub5- the ub5s have a crescent like soundstage and the rps have more like a semi-circle.
The only Klipsch models I would consider are the RP ones where they have allegedly fixed the amp issues. They are over your price point though.

FWIW, I was wondering about mine too, yesterday - it turns out the order confirmation and shipment notification emails had gone to my spam folder in gmail.

These are definitely advertised as "new".

They're still a little chilly from having sat in a UPS truck on a cold day, but so far they sound great out of the box. In a blind test, I think I'd be hard pressed to pick out the difference between these and 'The Sevens' (which I've returned due to idle hiss). I think this set is a keeper!
