Anyone know if this is a good printer? Looking for one for my son and I to mess around with but I know next to nothing about what to look for.

I have the Elegoo Neptune 4 Pro. They are a great brand and value for the money.
The bed levelling is pretty easy and the printers are quiet. I like it much, much more compared to my Creality Ender.

Should be a great printer for most stuff. Printing huge stuff on something like the Plus may warrant the need to enclose the 3d printer in a cheap tent designed for it, which prevents warping during long prints. But those enclosures are like $40 and you can wait until you need it.

unless you specifically need the volume... stick with Bambulab products (A1 is priced close), they've made 3D printing the hobby, no maintaining the 3D printer the hobby Wink

Best to stick with Bambu Lab printers like the A1, it'll be much more enjoyable hobby with your son and easier to learn. But their filament is great value and highly recommended.

We'd mainly be printing terrain for table top games. I see there's an A1 mini as well. Would the mini work for terrain or should we go with the regular A1?

print quality wise, they're the same, it just boils down to print volume (heatbed is 100C vs 80C on the A1, but that won't matter if you're printing PLA/PETG)... if 180mm^3 is big enough (which i assume it would be for table top games) and you don't see needing the extra space or would like to put that money toward the AMS lite to print multicolor pieces, then yeah the A1 mini will certainly do the job.

I have the Neptune 4 Max. It has produced some amazing prints.
But the sheer size invokes many QC issues that need constant attention. I wish I had got the Plus instead, smaller plate, less wobbly calibration issues.
Unlike Bambu and Prusa, this has been a lot of effort to keep it functioning.

In standard D&D units, you'll be able to get a 6x6 grid printed on an A1 mini. A gaming company I particularly like, Fat Dragon Games, has a ton of videos showing the A1 mini in action and the type of print you get for D&D minis and terrain. Highly recommend checking them out if you're interested in using the A1 mini for terrain.

I was also going to ask how this compares to the A1. I have an A1 Mini, but really would like a second printer with a bigger bed

A solid printer with a great build volume and a great price. It has a 500 mm/s print speed. This would be a great first printer.

For those that do buy:

Up/down grade the firmware to 1.2.3.0, it's the most stable, solves all the bugs of previous versions and doesn't introduce more bugs

Bed leveling can be tricky, either swap the springs for silicone spacers, or add M4 nuts above the springs to hold the bed level screws in place so they can't wiggle loose. There are two bed posts that are fixed, if you go with silicone spacers, swap the posts for spacers too.

Absolutely utilize the network port / built in wifi so you can access the web interface called fluidd, being able to look at your bed variance at a single glance is amazing. Then look into adding "screw tilt calculate" in your printer config, it replaces the "paper leveling of the bed" with reading the distance of the motors/sensor.
cannot stress enough, z-offset is not bed leveling, and is how you prevent blobs gathering around your nozzle: strings= WAY too high, gaps between the lines = too high, ripples = too low, grinding = WAY too low

It may be a crapshoot but you can get a "pre owned" Artillery Sidewinder X2 for $60 including shipping. The first one I received was brand new and I have another on the way.

That being said if you are willing to invest more Bambu is the way to go. They are pretty much idiot proof. My X1C has only failed on a couple of prints over the past year and a half.

Got this printer from this sale. First 3D printer ever!

Firmware 1.2.3.3 / Interface 1.2.15 (newer version than 1.2.3.2 on the website right now!).

Calibration was not too bad, just read instructions, and adjusted using a sheet of paper as described. People seem to complain that calibrating is hard, but seemed alright overall.

Printed probably around 10 test objects, small size, probably 40 min max. No problems with the firmware, objects came out good. In one print had to swap filament from the provided test roll to a big one - resumed seamlessly.

Vibrations are substantial since the printer is sitting on a somewhat shaky table, so probably need to work on a solution to damper those.

Overall, pleased with the purchase so far!
