Aside from all the issues with the CURRENT dellrefurbished dot com - which is now completely handled by Fedex, and "refurbished" has a minimal meaning currently (I know this because I've purchased and returned a number of Grade A computers which weren't refurbished at all - for example, fans completely caked up with sh* ) ....

5420s have had a lot of problems. Not just the refurbished ones.

Quite a bit of problems with them shutting down randomly - absolutely no notice. Very difficult to figure out the cause. It can be everything ranging from not upgrading Bios, drivers, to problems caused by faulty RAM, to issues with Intel's new "sleep" regime. Can also be caused by Windows 11, which still has a lot of problems and compatibility issues. W11 was released without being fully developed.
For some reason, which isn't clear, the Latitude 5420 has a lot of problems. I've seen IT folks who oversee hundreds to thousands of computers say that they regularly deal with the random shutdown issues - they send them back under warranty and replace them with something else.

Others on slickdeal have mentioned that the 5XXX laptops released by Dell during the pandemic, are known for these problems.

Just be aware that this is refurbished by FedEx, and every single one of these machines I've bought has had a problem. Make sure and figure that out within the first hundred days of the warranty…

I swear I'd not buy another one, but I bought a 5420 recently through their site and only had to replace the battery since it was trashed. The rest of the machine runs great

Wait for the guys to jump and dump 'fedex' comments.

I bought a 7xx 2 in 1 3 years back, it was good.
In general, people comment are favord towarda 7xxx than 5xxx, i am not sure which models (i13 series or specific 5xx series). You have 15 days, if legit reason, no restock fee i think. Good price for good machine unless you get a lemon.

It's okay, but you're rolling the dice on how long this will actually be functional for you. After you factor in a warranty that's more than the very, very short-term warranty that they offer, that's an extra 50 bucks, and taxes, then you're already over $300. Why not spend a little bit more to have a new laptop that will have much better specs?

I got the shipment this afternoon. The cosmetic condition is D or worse. It is not just scratches and dents. Large areas of paint simply chipped off, leaving the black plastic base exposed. The largest area is almost 2"x2". I have had laptops that lasted 4 years or longer, never seen anything as "used" as this one.

Shame on Dell. Will no longer trust this company.

Was the battery covered under warranty? Thanks.
Good question. Dell Refurbished has always been good about the warranty. Yes it was. The laptop on sale was something like $330 for a i7 11 series, a few months ago, and they gave me $50 refund after not being able to source the battery themselves. So I found a battery on amazon for $35 and GTG.

My 5320 is similar. It came in great shape, but it's now dinged up super quickly. (much faster than the many other laptops I've owned. I go thru about 1/year and pass them on when done with them)

Ordered two 5420's on Friday afternoon, received Sunday afternoon, condition is grade A, one of them even had a biometric fingerprint scanner, updated to Win 11 Pro, and running solid. Another successful order from FedEx Refurbished.

It's a decent enough price especially when we're talking about 16GB of RAM for an extra $10. But the ones I see here are 11th gen Intel parts. If there were any 12th gen parts here I'd say it was a good deal.

Ordered a laptop last night, and now they have a "48FOR48" coupon…

Hopefully their customer service team will work with us on applying the new coupon.

I bought all of them lol. I still have 6 of them running. Gave away another 6. Dell discontinued good models. Started using cheap pandemic parts, solder the usbc charge ports. Dell was just churning out like defective Ford F150 and dealing with warranty claim later as the lockdown demand was high The 12 inch and 13 inch with intel 6th , 8th run like a dream on Win10 Never was a fan fragile 74xx and 54xx with Intel 10th & 11th gen. The older thick 5490 was thinkpad tough with zero issues. In that era you had better luck with Thinkpad/Elitebook running win10, even acer/gateway was more reliable
I had a 7250 and a 7450. Have a 7490. All excellent machines. Super solid and among the best keyboards you can find on a laptop. 7490 was from eBay.

My 7400 can shut down randomly. This happens when you turn it on and don't give it time to warm up, but go in and start putting a heavy load on it. Some OS updates have helped. Now I let it take its time to warm up a bit no problems after that.

Horrific experiences with two separate Dell Latitude 5-series Grade A laptop purchases. Don't take my word (or photos) as evidence. Check Reddit for comments from I.T. managers who bought these it lots of 100 at a time. A few of those I.T. managers for government and corporate offices ended up returning their entire lots saying that the system boards would eventually fail anyway. eBay has many of them for sale as non-functioning, parts only. Check Dell Communities for actual owner comments. Buying desktop units from FedEx Recycling (Dell Refurbished) is much safer and they can be fully cleaned, maintained and parts replaced later. People have had better outcomes with the Dell Latitude 7-series units from FedEx Recycling. We lost just under $600 on our two separate Grade A unit orders. Now it's a pile of parts that I haven't yet taken to the electronics recycling depot. Parts aren't that valuable either because they're used, older, low performance, lower capacities now, and not even Dell. YMMV - some do better than others. "Grade A" for FedEx means units that are better than the others they have. Our two separate Grade A units had worn ports, one had wallpaper plastic new skin, worn touchpads, small paint chips, etc. One failed only one month after warranty expiration. The other system board ended about 10 months after warranty expiration.
Horrific? Did you get the $49 1 year warranty?

That doesn't mean anything. Next thing people will say they are built in China. Whoops.

Would suggest to buy only 7 series latitude refurbished
The 5s can be a little heavier, thicker and different exterior materials. If you want a 15" you'll invariably have to get a 5k series. Or 3k.

I bought 4 refurbished by fedex dell optiplex or latitude machines for projects or family members and never had a problem with them. I'm not a dell fanboy, but I use Latitude Precision and Optiplex machines at work and they're built to last.
Same. After years of problems with half our Macs, I came to the realization that our Latitudes just worked.

Right now, I'm very unimpressed with the computers from Dell in the pandemic era, & dellrefurbished. If you buy from dellrefurbished, I'd say get the 1 year warranty, and be prepared to deal with problems. Absolutely run a battery report first thing, and if the battery capacity is at less than 80% of original, call them to replace. That's one more way they don't do what they should to refurbish computers - I suspect they just send them out with barely a glance, and hope for the best (knowing people lack knowledge, and many don't follow-up). I'd avoid computers that can only charge with USB-C (some also have a barrel adapter charger option built in, although may ship only with the USB-C adapter). Of course, back up your data frequently. Someone else has suggested buying Dell Precisions, but I'm not sure. I personally would stay away from the 3xxx Precisions, and maybe 5xxx or 7xxx are better than Latitudes, but that depends on the specific model (do research) and what specific components are included on a given computer. Precisions are more expensive, too. I'd also suggest upgrading (free) to W11 right away as that upgrade can cause difficult-to-troubleshoot issues with Latitudes (there's a reason why dellrefurbished doesn't do it themselves). You also need to upgrade drivers and Bios. If you upgrade right away, within the warranty, and run into problems you can't solve (like random shutdowns with no warning), return the computer. W11 still has a lot of incompatibilities. Also, I only buy computers with the "Pro" version of W10.
It goes without saying that people should always be backing up no matter what they use. W11 is a no brainer, but people see to like to dislike it.

do you know which Linux version would be better on old laptop? I have couple hp Business laptops (almost 12+ old) with XP (core duo or later, but not newer processor) in good working condition, which i thought will flash with Linux and donate.
I have a 7490 Latitude. Just installed Linux Mint. Other distros seem to be not as foolproof, at least for my machine. You'll have to google and look at compatability.
