I made the switch a couple of years ago because - like you - I infrequently actually need to use the app. I get out and do photography a couple of times a year, and I don't tend to touch it outside of those times. So I deal with the hassle and instability and use the free app.

For my own take, I used DxO Photolab for a while and really liked it. It has arguably the best denoising tool (and lens corrections), which could be handy if the photography you do potentially introduces lots of noise (e.g. a high ISO is sometimes unavoidable in wildlife photography). However, you can buy DxO PureRAW as a cheaper, standalone product if all you want is the denoising and lens corrections.
I know of plenty of people who also like Capture One. Never tried it myself.
Darktable seems to be the most commonly recommended free option, but supposedly has a very steep learning curve.
Ultimately, I've defaulted back to Lightroom. For better or worse, I just find it easiest to use and get decent results. I do have it paired with DxO PureRAW, though.
