7 has gotten terrible reviews from Civ fans, but as someone new to the franchise you may find it better; I've been playing turn-based hex strategy games since I was running a 90 mhz Compaq Presario and want in-depth resource management / multiple layers of gameplay / multiple avenues to winning, so 6 was kind of the pinnacle for playing the same game for multiple days and putting hundreds of hours into.
Based on the reviews of 7, the newest addition, I'm going to wait for additional patches (they've already released 3 patches and the game was released less than 10 days ago officially) and cross my fingers that it develops quickly into something other Civ fans enjoy.
I believe you'd be hard pressed to find a group of people more fanatical about a franchise than Civ fans--they/we span generations and some have been playing since command prompt days. Everyone has their favorite, and can wax poetic about the virtues of their chosen edition over all the others.
I've found they're all worth playing. I've played 6 on multiple platforms and found almost all of them to be very uniform and fulfilling. I've played 5 on PC and Xbox and found the PC version to be superior.
Highly recommend buying both complete versions of 5 and 6 for PC if you enjoy the genre, as in many ways these have become one of the gold standards.
Civ V was a very very good game, so they innovated with 6 and 7 with districts and adjacency bonuses instead of trying to top a masterpiece. The district innovation is probably my least favorite part of 6 and thankfully they dropped districts for 7 and cut back on the adjacency bonuses you have to plan for somewhat.
So, for a lot of people who don't like Districts, Civ V is still the go-to game. I've put in 250+ hours and I've seen people who played 1-2k hours.. The replayability is really insane. I actually just started to play it again while I wait for 7 to finish cooking. I had played a lot of 6 and even Beyond Earth leading up to the release of 7 and yet coming back to 5 still felt refreshing and fun. It's definitely not obsolete by any means, nor "done better" in 6/7 as again, they decided to keep innovating. Civ 5 feels the most like a fun board game to me.
Still superactive modding community as well on civfanatics that is continuously updating the game and making it more challenging. I could beat the base game on almost any level, but they've made it much more challenging with the Vox Populi.

I found Civ V to be one of the most enjoyable. It's really polished, has a beautiful presentation and good mod support to extend its already expansive gameplay. At this price it must be one of the best value propositions in entertainment.
