Atlanta (ATL) nonstop to Milan (MXP) is currently at an all-time low. We did this trip last year for about $200 more and that was still considered a good deal. Note that you can also return nonstop from Venice for slightly more money, which gives you a lot of travel flexibility. All major cities are connected by cheap and clean high-speed rail. We landed in Milan at 9am and were sitting in Florence before our Airbnb checkin time, plus got a nap on the train.
Link in example is late March, midweek departure and return, but there are now summer fares from May through August in the $400 and $500 ranges (normally $1,200+). Even then, I still recommend spring if you can -- crowds are out of control at all major sites. Spring today is busier than summer 10 or 15 years ago.
Add $200 RT for checked bags, seat selection, and free changes. Hat tip to Going.com (Scott's), the best $50/yr subscription in travel.

Side note, but most of these routes are on a 767, which has some of the highest passenger satisfaction ratings -- seating is 2/3/2 meaning almost nobody has a middle seat. An under appreciated perk.

Something to be mindful about Italy is the lack of (sufficient) air conditioning during hotter months can be an issue. Northern Italy such as Milan is likely to be better. Venice may be a bit too humid, and locals take August off in cities such as Rome so it comes with some trade-offs. Be sure to research to avoid being surprised.
Be patient, there's been an ATL price war for the past few days including AMS, CDG, MXP, and a couple others. But they do come and go really quickly. Usually it's AA/BA and then Delta/KLM/AF respond (or vice versa)

Seems a little bit like a needle in a haystack, do you have more guidance you can provide?
