I'll post a pro-Xen comment after playing this in Q4 2024. The original Xen is probably burned into your mind, and perhaps there was a FEW too many puzzles/rooms in Xen. I was feeling the bloat a little bit.

HOWEVER, for this price, for this game, for this lore, for this lack of source material, in relation to the length of Xen vs how long/short the remake of the earth based sections are...when you take everything into account, I'm fine with their choices and had a good time despite the longer length. For 20 years we had like 5 rooms and then a boss, why not explore that a bit more?
Agreed. I loved their take on Xen. There were some parts that dragged a bit, but the build out of all the science/testing outposts and the associated puzzles were REALLY good.
The Xen in Black Mesa is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT and a significant improvement over the original. So so SO much better. Idk what these other folks are saying about it - it beats the pants off the original in EVERY WAY. I've even just sat there for minutes taking in the twinkle and bioluminescent plants and animals swaying . Nothing like OG HL.

Definitely a great deal, also a pretty damn good take on HL, but Xen was such a slog.

OMG Xen was so bad. Took me 3-4 attempts (over different days) to make it through it was so long and boring I ended up just not finishing the same and watching the end on YouTube....that being said Black Mesa was exactly like I remembered OG Half Life being but somehow being 1000x better at the same time. Well worth $5 regardless if you have never played the original HL or have beaten it a dozen times.

Yes I loved Black Mesa, since I already beat the original, I just used cheat codes for unlimited ammo and all the weapons. It was a blast to play with unlimited Glion + plasma ammo, and rockets.

Thanks OP! I gave it a buy. Haven't played the original since around the year 2000. I only have trace memories of it, so it will mostly feel like a new playthrough for me. I don't remember Xen being too bad in the original but I remember I hated that cumbersome long jump mechanic. Interested to see how it goes in this remake.

Black mesa is a masterpiece remake of the masterpiece original, but none the less it is slightly controversial for good reasons. It's not 1 to 1 Half-Life, and the things it gets wrong aren't horrible by any means, but definitely change the feel of the game. I'd recommend playing the original first before picking up Black Mesa, but if the original is just "too old" for you to get behind, then Black Mesa is a great modern take on one of the best games ever made.

I'm another Black Mesa Xen apologist.

In the original Half Life, young me had NO IDEA what was supposed to be going on in Xen. 1998 textures, level design, creature animations, and cut-scene-free storytelling were simply not up to the challenge of the full scope of the story they were trying to tell; a wild and diverse, wholly alien ecosystem to explore, and the deeper you delve, the more it slowly reveals the creeping perversion of immensely powerful, intelligent antagonists. Antagonists whose ire the previous explorers had drawn and kept secret, which caused the whole mess in the first place. Half Life's version of Xen was just... like a Duke Nukem run and gun shooting gallery with bizarre puzzles and a new skybox.

Black Mesa does a much better job of that, even if its Xen section could have used a little editing down. And maybe more discipline on their release schedule.

I personally consider Black Mesa, in its entirety, to be the best way to experience Half Life in 2025. At $5 its a no-brainer.

I love the new Xen, but I can't deny that in my playthrough I had 3 game breaking bugs during Xen which required me to noclip or do sketch prop jumps to get out of. It's amazing but simply isn't as polished as the rest of the experience, and both Xen's have their pros and cons. Also as Yahtzee Croshaw said when the game first came out, I'm not exactly sure the best way to fix the most controversial section of Half-Life was to extend its runtime by 4 hours. While the original Xen is less pretty, and has worse environmental storytelling, I'd take it over the remakes take for its briefer nature while still getting across that point that we have stumbled into something so much bigger than ourselves.

Xen with conveyer belts ruined the end of the game for me. Did not finish. Otherwise enjoyed it. Whoever designed miles of conveyer belts hanging in space and going no-where should be ashamed
