I bought the Hisense u7 and the TCL M7 and tested them extensively through November and December.
To sum it up the u7 has much better sound. For the 55-in and it being in a bedroom not needing to have a sound bar is a key feature. Upscaling on TV has issues.

4K content on both televisions are equal I watched Dune 2 side by side frame for frame on both televisions and found myself in bright scenes looking at the M7 while in dark scenes caves with fire it was the u7.

I ended up getting the M7 for 436 off of Amazon early November. And the u7 for I think 486.

That being said I have 2 55-in TVs and I'm waiting for a 65 or 75 in of either one to go on sale I'll buy either one. I played Xbox on both looks amazing.

Adjustment features on the u7 are much greater in number than the M7.

Need that 65" to move from the $699 range it's been stuck at for months now.

It's a saving of $20 off its usual $499.99 price per Best Buy.

How risky is open box "fair" condition from best buy?
Hard to say.

My personal experience purchasing used products from Best Buy is that most are barely opened box returns, but then again, I've never purchased a TV from them, only used audio equipment and headphones. I say as long as you have a local Best Buy near you and a big enough car to fit the TV in case you have to return it, that it may be worth the risk, and if they allow you to add geek squad protection, if you'd like.

I love this tv, guests enjoy it as well. Have owned for about 6 months so far and I paid $497 back then. Looks amazing with shows that focus on nature, the colors pop. Hard to find a better one in this price range honestly. The next step up is oleds
Same here. Absolutely love this TV. Installing the beta firmware takes it to a whole new level. Nothing beats it for gaming at this price point, unless you can snag an OLED for super cheap.

Has anyone had any experience returning a TV to Amazon? Is it a huge pain in the butt?

Yes... the previous selling price was $499.99 @ Best Buy. When posting a deal it asks for LIST PRICE, which shows $1099.99 on TCL's website.

Why was mine such a POS? I bought one in Dec and returned it after 1 week. Crude, fuzzy mixed up picture. Had to change settings from app to app. Terrible upscaling.

Isn't that the QM8 and isn't it already out?

I think they mean the qm7k. The qm8 is the same model year at hthis one, but it's the high end model.

The qm6k is already out and highly regarded. Caleb from digital trends recommends it over this model, but it's currently $200 more.

Thank you OP…just picked up an Open-box (Excellent) 75" QM7 at BB for under $600 and looking forward to setting it up tomorrow.

Are there any recommendations on picture settings/calibrations that can be done by the user without specialized equipment? Thanks

Sorry to hear. I got mine in Jan and it's been rock solid. The only TV that rivals it is my Sony OLED and they're pretty close.

Check out AVSforums. Lots of good info and calibration settings on that site. If you install the beta firmware, it makes the TV even better.

$499 is not the normal price, it is the normal sale price we have seen a few times now. This is the cheapest I have seen it widely available.

Want to pull the trigger on a 98" TCL (not QM7) that dropped price as well. But the new TCL models + possible tariffs got my head spinning. Not sure what to do.

I've bought some open box fair items that were completely fine from best buy but I tried buying an open box fair TV last year and it had scratches all over the screen.

I would still consider buying something that's listed as fair condition, if the price was good enough, but I wouldn't leave the store without opening it first.

At my best buy the open box excellent is $420, good for $400, and fair for $380. With that small of a difference I would probably get one of the better conditions. Also remember that the warranty isn't the same with open box items. Also if your credit card typically offers an extended warranty it usually doesn't apply to used/open box items (you may get lucky though)
