Thanks. I'm looking for a 4TB external drive that's faster. My laptop has two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Are there any drives that are faster than this that won't break the bank?

You definitely can, but ask yourself if you really need it. I have a Sabrent Rocket (2TB). Speeds go up to 2500 or so, but the price is double or more. I have the 4tb of the Crucial x9 Pro and can edit on FCP with no issues. I was also able to do light editing on the older x6, but that one maxed out at around 500 and is a bit old now.

Thanks. That's super helpful. I'm actually eyeing the the 4tb of the Crucial x9 Pro because it's only $210. As you rightly point out, the SSD's that have 2x the speed also have 2x the price.

You can also get the non pro 4TB version on amazon for $200, but that one uses QLC vs TLC, so the extra $10 is probably worth it on the pro.

Thanks. That's right. That's why I'm looking at the X9 Pro.

With Thunderbolt 5, these drives could theoretically be as fast as internal SSDs were a couple years ago. But the price of Thunderbolt 5 SSDs will be very high. And I don't think it'll make much of a difference for most applications. I'll use mine mainly as temporary backup while traveling. The X9 Pro is probably fast enough for that for the next ten years.

I got this deal the last time it was posted to backup my Mac M4 mini and it works pretty damn good. The first backup took a few minutes but now my incremental backups are done within seconds, so I'm satisfied. I guess it depends on your backup use-case.
I'm actually going to buy another one for my Macbook Air as well since that's my travel laptop. For the price, you can't beat it IMO.

Got my x9 pro and tried to back up photos from my wife's iPhone 15, doesn't really work, if you select like 4000 photos it just goes into a 10 minute downloading loop and then fails.

Apple makes it such a pain to get photos off the phone, thought this might be an easy solution but nope, Apple wins again. 😆
