What I did with my Mac mini was get an OWC Thunderbolt enclosure and drop a 4TB WD Black NVME in it. Spent about $350 which was way cheaper than adding storage with Apple's prices.
Wow that beefy of a computer should come with a 2TB SSD! At least 1TB base.
Great deal for the rest of the machine though!
A 14" MacBook Pro with the same M4 Max (and 1TB storage, minimum storage for the MBP with this chip) goes for $3,200 at Apple, just for reference.

The MBP has the screen, keyboard, trackpad, and portability (edit- and 512GB of additional storage), but this Studio gives you a few extra ports (including USB-A and 10Gb Ethernet) and is almost half the price.

does it mean 4 gb of regular memory and 32gb of vram or?
36 GB of RAM. The GPU shares the RAM. The computer (like what modern OSes do) will also use the SSD for 'RAM' if needed.

Couldn't justify the M3 Ultra, but the M4 Max should be a nice little upgrade from my M1 Max.

fast 'Shared Memory', that the OS and GPU can both utilized it as needed.

It's not matching RTX 50 GPU vram bandwidth but that's a whole different ballpark.

is it possible to add more hard drive space?

I use an external hard drive enclosure with a Samsung drive in a pouch on my Macbook. It has worked great. Speeds are not as fast as the internal Apple but are still quick.

Yea bro, that's what i did today. Upgrade from my M1 Max (with 64G RAM). figure I never really needed that much of Ram at the first place. 36 RAM should be more than enough for my daily need, if needed more RAM i'd just shuffle it over to my DIY PCs.

I'm on the fence. Got the PM from best buy but I'm contemplating. Do you think prices will get lower that this? Maybe $1500 or that's far fetched

B&H sells the M4Max MBP14 for $2850 half the time, no tax with payboo.

The ultra version is super slick if you can get it. Too bad they don't ship.
Not this time around. The Ultra version is over $1k more, and based on the M3, instead of the M4 max here. The difference is MUCH less than in previous versions where the Ultra is same generation. The Ultra's strength is very specific, mostly in the GPU cores, for graphic and rendering,

I've got last years Studio. Yes, storage is pricy, but I went for the 512gb base. Then built my own external SSD, adding 4tb working at almost the same speed, over 3000 MB/s. This takes some management, but I save all my working files on the external, and even divert some large system files (eg apple audio samples & loops) externally using symbolic links (symlinks). It's always attached to the first TB4 port, and there are plenty of ports for other things.

I'm now debating between this and the Mac Mini M4 with 24GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I do mainly Lightroom and Photoshop editing and some 4K video editing. Is the Studio overkill? Is the performance of the Studio (M4 Max) vastly greater than the Mini (M4) and worth the $800 difference?

dependen on how much time you'd like to save(or if it worth the price differences).

the performance should be significant differ between M4 and M4 Max.

Dont use a brick to run a stupid game. Windows laptops are 20x better than macbook. Other than hardware macos sucks
I use Windows for my office work, Mac for my personal (numbers, keynote for presentations, photo, video editing etc). To me, windows no where close to Mac. after over 15 years of Mac use, tried to switch to windows for 4090 Nvidia Graphics card and its coming at half of the price. On day 1, photoshop app hung, and I can't even close using Task Manager, returned it immediately. I would never go back to Windows again.
