USB-c Ethernet adapters are super useful in that you can troubleshoot or use wired networks with your phone. I used to buy laptops just so I could troubleshoot my network in different areas of my house. Now I just use my iPhone.
Never had one go bad. Pigtail is much better than a ruined/loose port due to the strain of the non-pigtail kinds. Besides, I can easily replace an adapter that cost $10-$15, but not so much a soldered on port.

The 5 port switch is ridiculously tiny, roughly the same dimensions as a credit card (minus the thickness). It also runs off a 5V/1A power supply, so you could definitely run it off USB if you have the right cable.

Don't get any ethernet adapter that's on a pigtail cable, it goes bad quite fast. Just stick with a USBA one piece eth dongle no cable.

Does the usb-c to ethernet work from power on of the device? Will it see it to give an option in the BIOS to boot from the dongle? I image a lot of tablets and new laptops at work that don't have ethernet on board. We use PXE to load a standard image from an SCCM server. I have to hook the device up to a bulky docking station just for the ethernet port on it to image the tablet. It would be convenient to have a couple of these on-hand to save space on the bench. Also, to diagnose wifi issues or load drivers without wifi.

No thanks, I'll stick with the failure point being on the $12 adapter rather than the USB port on my motherboard.

Unless you have USB power on boot disabled in the BIOS, this will work for PXE booting to image devices (or any USB to Ethernet adapter, really). I use a similar USB-C to Ethernet adapter for the exact same purpose and it works great.

Just an FYI, I bought one of these two years ago and it died within 45 days. Not eligible for an RMA or return either. I do not recommend buying this.
