I've bought two $5-10 floor pumps via this site... and I wish I hadn't.
I agree this pump is terrible. If it had a standard metal locking valve it would be ok.

what makes a bad bike pump? I wish it had a guage but other than that, idk what to look for

I mostly use a little compressor. I bought one that uses the same batteries as my drill. The nice thing about the one I have is I can use battery, AC or car 12v too. The little battery powered inflator/power packs work well. However, with those you usually get a non-replaceable battery. So it becomes ewaste after a couple years.

This is a copy of the Topeak one, one of the highest rated pumps out there. It's considerably more expensive but will last many many years.

had it in my hands in store a few days ago and then decided against it. Even as a backup. Even when the models with pumps might not be super accurate. Still not worth $5.

Topeak JoeBlow is good... I've had mine for about fifteen years now although it was half the price when I bought it.

Whether a casual rider needs a $60 hand pump though, I don't know. Most gas stations have free air and even if you need a presta valve there's an adapter for that. Gas station air is only an issue if you want to run higher pressures like 90-100psi, most of them seem to allow up to 60psi or so which is more than enough for hybrids and MTBs. Speaking of pressure, be sure to look up an online calculator to get a good sense of how much pressure you should really be running and don't over fill which just creates a harsher ride.

I think you might be better getting a good small pump or CO2 system so that you can refill while on a ride in an emergency than a floor pump if you don't think you'd use it regularly. The most important thing with portable pumps in my experience is that it has a hose attached as the ones lacking are annoying to operate. CO2 is easier to work with once you have the hang of it.

All that said, I'd just get some sort of electric inflator to use for sports balls, your car tires when needed, inflatables, or anything else. For casual use, it's sufficient and versatile.

I know everyone is knocking this pump but the Blackburn lifetime warranty is legit. They replaced my two year old pump after the gauge failed, no questions asked. For that fact alone I would buy another Blackburn pump in the future.

Is there a law against using a separate pressure gauge on bike tires?

You mean they're the same color? Because there's nothing else similar between the JoeBlow and the Blackburn pump.

If you need to go pass 50 PSI, this is not the pump for you.
So it's useless....
